I have been thinking along these line for a while. We all have different reasons why you would buy a certain kind of car. Personally I had t buy a new one due to my motorplan on the Merc expiered. Agter doing some homework decided on the Merc A 250 Sport. Ordered it and saw the S3 a few months later on a motorshow. Now my brain was thinking as I have never owened a Audi/Volkwagen product before. The following deciding factors was tilting the scale in the Audi's favour:

The Build Quality - just 10 times better than the Merc, no rattles and solid panels.
The power delivery at 221 Kw (206 over here) and 300 Bhp.
More place in die back for adults traveling with you.
Half size spare tyre (Merc has none and rely on BMW at Call.
Wider boot space, and just a final all rounder with enough power to make most cars looking for parking.

What were all your guys personal reasons for this particular model ??? Would love to hear. !!!!

Wanted a fast a3 with a bit of a difference.

Love Audi hate Merc/BMW.
Want 30+ mpg if poss. Acceleration handling pan roof , understated style good service back up. 4 seats occasionally. Roof bars. Nothing else will do !! A manual 184 quattro A3 might have been ok but Audi do not sell in UK !

Already had a 8P A3 (1.4TFSI) This time though, was the first time I had set out to buy a car because I could, not because I needed to. In the past car purchases where because we needed to replace old cars, or because we needed a second car or because we needed something bigger. There was nothing wrong with the 2010 A3, and I would be sad to see her go, but I had decided and was able to treat myself to something extra special.

What to buy?

My decision to stay with Audi was relatively easy, I did briefly think about a BMW X1, and it would have to have been an X model as I dislike RWD, but the one thing I like in all aspects of life is understated quality, the sort of quality which is there but does not shout out at you, the type of quality that you can't put your finger on but if you know a product type, be it a car or clothes, you know the quality is there with certain brands. BMW's are good cars but they are shouty, people who don't know one end of a car from another recognise a BMW, as for Mercedes, over priced, end of story, Audi all the way for me.

My A3 was large enough for the four of us for the vast majority of the time, it was only on odd occasions, like taking my daughter to university, when extra space would have been nice. I wanted something with a little more power than the 1.4 TFSI which had enough power and torque when I was the only person in the car but when carrying 4 people and luggage it lacked enough torque at motorway speeds, I briefly flirted with the idea of going for a year old Q3 but they were looking a little expensive as year old prices had not dropped by as much as I had expected. That said, even going for a diesel Q3 (170BHP quatro) the extra power did not compensate for the extra weight and so the performance compared to the A3 was no better and with the new A3 being available the Q3 interior was starting to look a bit dated. So that was it for me a 2.0 TDI A3 Sportback.

Wanted a very rapid, sporty, good looking car with 4 doors for the kids (occasionally) reasonable economy (for a sub 5 sec to 60 car) premium interior and all the gadgets without breaking the bank. Also love Quattro traction as my 200BHP FWD Scirocco easily breaks traction in damp/loose conditions when flooring it which is annoying. Looked at S4 and S5 sportback as well, but they are older cars and V6's are much thirstier than the S3 and not any faster. Generally I think most BMW are, if not ugly, then a bit dull styling wise, and how a car looks is important to me, and I'm about 20 years too young for a Merc ;)

I am not ageist!! But oldish! Whatever modern MB are aweful IMHO

4wd and small enough to fit in our garage in the alps. Roof rails needed for skis and bikes transport. Sub5 secs to 100kmh.

Just a shame it's not fitted with a proper mechanical differential.

Time comming up to swap the A1 and they hadnt built an S1, if the S1 existed and was quattro and aroud 5s 0-60 and a little bit cheaper then that would be it, but as it looks like it will ever exist.
Found out about the S3 and decided I wanted a sub 5 second car, with some practicality. That limits it very quickly, didnt like the Merc or BMW so the S3 it was.

Because it's cheap on PCP. It's worked out cheaper than getting another A4 or A3 Tdi, mainly down to good residuals.

It's not a 135i M.......

The motoring press and even Chris Harris (who I highly respect) tell me I should get the 135i M - but taking everything in to account the S3 is one of the best hot hatch ownership prospects available IMHO.

Good quality, quick, AWD family hatchback for our soon to be increasing family.
Compromise of getting the S3 (had an S5 Coupe beforehand) has allowed me to release funds to also get a V8 to keep in the garage for more special occasions.

Got both cars within a week of each other; be a while before I get another..........

I've had an 2011 S4 from new and it was time for a change. Was tempted by the RS4 but decided to downsize and save some pennies! Same Audi quality and good performance meant not too much compromise. Will miss the V6 soundtrack of the S4 and hope the S3 lives up to expectations.

Well I got an email of off some Nigerian guy saying that he had millions to donate to me but in order to get it I had to buy an Audi S3......

In seriousness though I looked at the A45 and the M135i too. The A45 was too expensive (like for like spec was about 4k or so more than the S3) and the m135i had several flaws (the looks on the outside, the dash, the screen on the dash looking like a complete afterthough, strange driving position where your legs are placed to the right) and also the saleman was an a**e. He made up a spec for me and then offered almost 1.5k less for my trade in, the finance I told him was about £45 pcm more than the audi and yet he still said (in his exact words) "So when can we expect your business?" - arrogant shmuck!!

The guy I am dealing with at Aberdeen Audi has been brand new and they beat 4 other Audi dealers by quite a bit with the deal they offered me (as well as beating BMW and Mercedes) so it was a no brainer. Oh and I actually liked the S£ better than the others too which helped a lot!!

simple.

1. 300BHP instead of 265 on 8P with a stage 1 being more than enough should i go down that route.
2. New DRL's vast improvement than previous gen.
3. New indicators/rear LED's as (2.)
4. B&O
5. Visually more aggressive specifically the front.
6. Probably my last new Audi for a while with a wedding to pay for.

Already had an 8P S3 and it is the best all round practical performance car I'd ever owned. I knew the new one was coming out and my 8P was nearly 5yrs old and I was ready for a change, so sent the dealer I bought my existing one from a quick email to see what deal he could do. Straight away got 5% discount and a really good trade in price and the payments weren't too much more than my existing S3, so ordered it the same day. That was June, hadn't driven it or seen it in the metal, but knew it would be as good if not better than the 8P. It has completely surpassed my original expectations, amazing everyday performance car.
I also looked at M135i (my cousin works for sycamore BMW in peterborough) but they couldn't get close on a deal. I also enquired about the A45 AMG but they never came back to me so obviously weren't that bothered about my business.
I'm sure I made the best decision tho, it really is an epic car.

I wanted something quick but usable everyday and that didn't cost a fortune.

I had a mental target of sub 5 seconds to 60 too.

I also need all wheel drive due to living in a hilly village part of the time.

Had a long list of Audi products, as have the rest of my family, and have a great relationship with the local dealer.

I thought a lot about a S6, S4 and even an RS4, all avant's, but I couldn't justify the cost or the real need as it's just me in my life, no other half etc.

I do a lot of shooting though so need the extra space that a hatchback offers.

I'm also going to keep this for a long time and have ordered the 5 year warranty as a result - which hopefully indicates how confident Audi are in their product.

Build week 3....

ticks alot of boxes.... smart looking car, nice interior, mrs can drive it too, fits on the drive, golf clubs slip in the boot, mates in the back.
haven't had a hatchback since i was 20 (back in the boy racer days!)

I was going to buy an S3 in a couple of years as i had always wanted one but it was brought forward as some idiot crashed into my A5 and i didn't want it back after it was repaired.
