I have got a 2004 audi a4 1.8t. I have a problem with the coolant, it doesn't appear to be circulating. Initially thought it could be an air lock, took the small return pipe off and initially had water running through, then started stuttering and then stopped completely and just had steam coming out. The temperature gauge stays the same at about 90. What could it be?

as abive or stat not open

Does the rad and the hoses get hot and if so does the fan come on?If not its probably the water pump

The hose going out of the radiator and into the engine is hot as is the return pipe. Not entirely sure about the radiator, the fan doesn't come on but wasn't sure if this was because the temperature gauge is always reading ninety.

Yeah the climate control is all fine. Is the water pump a big job? Thinking about doing it myself.

Its part of the timing/cam belt. So is a fairly big job if your never tackled one before. Plus there are some tools required to lock the cam when changing the belt. Not for the faint hearted.

I'm confused why don't you think the waters circulating exactly. There's a small bleed screw on the steel coolant pipe that runs over the injectors. Try that, if there's hot air from the heaters the waters moving.

Because when you remove the return pipe nothing comes out of it except steam. If you leave the return pipe attached to the expansion tank them the water coils out over. Have tried that screw but can't seem to move it.

the reason why i think it ain't circulating is because for it to be move around it should come back in the tank not boil in the tank. The bottom hose going into bottom of the engine is stone cold and the pipe along inlet is burning hot and when u take small pipe off tank has a little flow the just constant steam comes out off the pipe. And near Exeter Devon lol?? Thanks for comments aswell

Ok let me change the question why did you think there was a problem before you pulled this pipe off. Run it up to temp for a while check the rad top to bottom should be hot. As well as top and bottom rad hoses. Try some mole grips to get more leverage on the screw if it's tight. They can be a pain to get the air out the system. That small pipe is just a vent pipe and doesn't generally circulate coolant

Ok if waters not getting to the rad and your heaters are getting hot. I'd check the thermostat. As sounds like pumps working but stats not opening. Stats a pain in the backside to get to as well.

I only picked the car up yesterday and after driving it for an hour The oil low level light came on, we pulled in. Stopped and turned the car off for five minutes, then restarted it. Oil warning light had gone out and did not come back on for about another three quarters of an hour. Once home checked oil which was low, checked water at the same time when the car had cooled and was empty.
I tried grips on the screw but still couldn't undo it, but will try again tomorrow.
Will check radiator tomorrow as well.

Sounds like you picked it up from 1 careful owner there. Good luck with it. If the waters low you may have a leak as they generally don't use water. But if oils low then who knows when was last looked at. But I'd check the stat if it's not getting to the rad. And the stat housing is behind the alternator just to add to the fun
