Hi, complete Audi Noob here but looking to buy a 2.0t sportback for swmbo, ideally I'd like a s line car with leather and as many toys as possible.

Only got a 8k budget so I'm guessing a 05-07 car with 70-100k on which tbh is ok as swmbo only does 2k miles per year hence a petrol (2.0t is for me) so is there some must do checks on this engine/car etc etc ? I'd rather have a manual over a dsg and would like a Quattro as I'm guessing they'll be a bit more planted in all weathers what with carrying my family about ;-)

Is there any specific things required to make retrofit items easier or plug and play ? I'd like a car with xenons/mfsw/Bose/roof rails but obviously I'm aware the rocking horse poo shop is only open on the eighth day lol, any pointers appreciated as I'm the one pushing for a older Audi over a Focus or Froggy box hence really needing to buy a goodun ;-)
cheers

quattro's in those years only come manual anyway, or FWD can come with auto.
Just make sure to get full service history, and ask about the haldex (quattro) servicing, if no evidence of this, knock em down a bit in price!

I bought my 05 A3 quattro this year, and its amazing, just had it remapped also to around 265bhp which is same as stock S3. Its also done 120k miles!

But im thinking for 8k you should getting less miles than 100k!!! i paid just over half of what your asking to pay for mine, tho only came with panaramic roof, double din, comfort lights and full leathers and its only a 'sports' (only ha). But other bits can always be retrofit afterwards, we have a forum guru who does all this for a good price!

But personally if i had 8k to spend, id maybe try and find the bit extra and buy an S3! unless you want 5 door which is more than that lol.

but DO IT, dont even think about a focus! (unless its a MK1 RS!)

Im sure someone with more knowledge might point you something to look at.

Edit: looking at autotrader, i seem to think i got a good deal lol. But i would probably buy a decent car based on the engine, then pay for retrofits afterwards. Least you know the motor may be sound rather than having all the goodies and then being stuck in the drive :p

Thanks for the advice, I've seen a few that I like so I'll be giving them a ring ;-) I'd love a S3 but it needs to be a five door tbh which puts them well out of my budget oh and looking at RS3's is just teasing myself lol

Usual checks then for damage and mechanical history/condition, can everything be retrofitted ? Is there not like a certain spec for a certain control module or wiring or something ?

Sorry for the noobie questions I'm trying the search and FAQ's but Audi isn't my first language lol

Cheers James

Hi mate go for a quattro as you can't retrofit that afterwards.

Also a few things that you should go for
- Climate control
-Double din headunit

Cheers Sliced, I would rather a Quattro ;-) I'm hardly going to be using it but I just can't leave anything alone lol

deffo agree with the double din unit, i didnt even realise i could have 6 CD's inside it for ages!! epic win lol.

and how do i know if i have climate control or not? lmao

done alot more miles tho! as i said before, aim for a good car/engine, then worry about adding leathers etc afterwards.

and dont be afraid to travel! i travelled around 600 miles before i found the right one for me. Well worth it! and dont be afraid to WALK AWAY, anything seems iffy or you think they are lieing, WALK AWAY.

Do it my style, ask for the nearest maccies to grab some food before coming back, then go get double cheeseburgers and drive straight home! :p

Mcd's !!!! Sorry but nah I'd rather go to a nice pub ;-) lol I don't mind travelling as I've bought various vans from all over the country, trouble is this is for swmbo and she's not willing to trek to far :-( Can't knock her though as we bought a run down house a few years ago and she's run £1k crapper/dump runners for a couple of years whilst we've done it and I run around in a brand new Transporter :)

Most have climate - a few poverty spec don't - look at the heater controls -

I do like the look of it and the price would leave some of the budget to get it given a good going over, maybe some new wheels and a remap too ;-)

Are they fairly bullet proof then or is there any common faults ?

most common fault tends to be the diverter valve

mine only has 2 dials? and doesnt look like that at all aha, the car he just linked has the same control unit as mine.

Yours has climate, so does mine - most do. The pic was the non-climate.

Decent Car it's a steal CLICK HERE

I've been ringing the black one all day, left messages and emailed, finally someone answered and said I can't view until the 2nd :-( Got the money sat waiting and was willing to travel this afty, I thought car dealers where a bit hot on having your dough ?

Not a bad price on that one. I paid about £7k for a 06, 56k-mile 2.0T S-line SE quattro a year ago. Xenons, bose, climate, sunroof, double-din 6cd, etc etc

Only thing that ever went wrong was blocked pickup pipe on day of purchase. Replaced, been lovely ever since.

Anything over 80k miles i'd budget a couple of grand to put her right after purchase anyway.

Yours sounds nice Wuta3 ;-) Cheers btw Crunchie, I'd like to put some of the later style alloys on but tbh I wouldn't get away with it lol

Other than usual service items and haldex as stated above check that fuel pump cam follower has been inspected or changed recently. Worn follower can damage the cam profile. Checking takes half hour and new follower is £45, damaged cam will be a whole lot more!

Small thing but this one really ****** me off; if it has drivers arm rest make sure the clip that holds the lid closed is not broken. Clip can't be replaced and you need to buy full lid which if leather costs £70ish.

Make sure you are 100% about going for manual box. I was sure 2 years ago with my S3 but kinda regretting not looking deeper into DSG.

If you have a mate with VCDS take them along when viewing the car and check for any error codes.

Good luck with the search, in the mean time have a good browse on here as lots of info on common 8P problems.

I second the arm rest lid. What a PITA! Mine was OK when bought but went very quickly. Might just remove the arm rest.

Cheers NKenny ;-) I'm the same with silly things like that ! Also for the price of a follower just change it ;-) How can I check the follower ? Or do I just change it when I get one ? Always amazes me how people skimp creating false economies :-(

I used this guide to check a while back. http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/174658-cam-follower.html
Thanks to mjr901 for the original post.

My follower was still good but plan to get it changed during service this year so that it is on the vehicle history.

It is not advised to do this on the driveway as involves removal of fuel lines, something the authorities are not keen on outside a controlled environment. If you are buying from a dealer get them to do it before purchase.

Is that a fairly straight forward job ?

Just found this one aswell

Audi A3 2.0 T FSI Quattro S line Special Edition 5dr +++ SPEC ///. . .

Seems a genuine car with full A/S/H

Just thought I'd update this thread ;-) I've bought this one, one owner from new with full Audi history.

Went to view it last Sat got halfway there and the dealer cancelled on us as he said the Haldex pump went, he's got it fixed and rang me this week so shot up there this afty, not had a chance to check everything out yet but it's driving nice :)
