Hi All!

I have the 2G MMI Sat Nav system fitted in my A4.

Would it be possible to retrofit the 3g system? ie. just installing the Multimedia drive in the dash.

Would there be any benefits to upgrading and would it just be a simple 'plug and play' fitment?

I am aware that the 3G system has the bigger 7" screen as opposed to the 6.5" 2G Screen, but don't know if this would be a big job to swap over.

Many Thanks in advance for any advice.

Possible yes but not plug and play.

Hazzydayz for example charge £2,934 for used parts without DAB or AMI.

Easier and cheaper finding a car with it already fitted.

I think the price is around £3.5k .... or at least it was when the 3G first came out.

It is a lot quicker and a lot smoother but it's not worth even £1k to do it.

You're forgetting about the rest of the parts :p

I'm pretty sure the only thing to be kept media-wise from your 2G setup is the CD changer, even the aircon panel is changed.

Remember you're gonna need component protection removed on multiple modules.

Its quite a big project and the bits will probably set you back ~£1.5k, if you do it yourself and buy second hand bits. Unfortunately, you will have to replace quite a few bits as Chris says. From memory, you need the main unit, 7" Display and cable, 3G console. I believe you also need a new radio and antenna amplifiers. You might need to change your gateway or at least upgrade the firmware as well. I've just done a concert radio to MMI 3G upgrade so am not totally familiar with the 2G to 3G requirements.

Sounds like ALOT of hassle to be honest. I've just seen the 3G head units cheap on eBay so that's what got me thinking.

Imo for the little that you're gonna gain I wouldn't bother doing it. You're still gonna need a possible new cluster, aircon panel and other wiring/antennas too and not forgetting component protection removal.

Everything 2G must go. Radio module, MMI Controller, screen, antennas all need to be changed. You can use your old cluster and if you wanted your heater controls to appear in the screen then yes a new Clima panel too, and as Chris says CP removal on the Clima and 5F unit

Another question. I know the 3G DVD drive can play movie DVD's and the 2G DVD drive (in the boot) can't. If I swapped this over for the 3G drive in the boot, would this be an easy swap?

I have MMI 2G with changer on dash. If i replace only changer with 3G multimedia
unit is it plug and play?
I don't want bigger display and features of 3G, only i want to replace changer with multimedia.
