S3 Turbo Kits? Apart from IHI - What is there?

Like i said i was not doubting what you claimed, just found it suprising that you can stay with a 996 TT and not an M5.

I suppose my TT was an X50 but i dont think ~50hp would make that much difference.

My old man has a F 360 and to be honest i find the straight line performance of that a tad dissappointing.

I drove a Turbo 4 a good while back and simply cant remember the experience well enough to relate it but i would still expect a turbo 4 to keep in touch with a new M5.

A few car lenghts difference over 100's of metres of distance is in-touch in my book!

110 Terminal is impressive given its FWD, it must have some serious mid range punch.

It must be terriffying not knowing when its next going to pop. Hopefully not halfway past a convoy with oncoming traffic.

God Thats Quick.
I'd still be short of a very early 996 even now, and the moneys been spent over 4.5 years and 80k miles. Its going to be kept forever, as a toy, to remind me that I should have bought a proper car in the first place. I'd do it again, as it's been fun getting here, but the new motor is a 330D Touring Sport Slushmatic. The porky will have to wait.

Nervus
The new M5 is a ludicrously rapid car. and by your definition of in touch, I was still in touch with him. The plays I've had with TT's have been at 50-130mph speeds. I would expect one to start to pull away after that due to superior aerodynamics and HP. The M5 started to pull away at silly speeds.

Up to 100mph, it's all about power to weight which is similar. Much over 120, It's all about HP.

The guy with the Turbo 4 is scared of it. A cayene S gave him a good run recently, but then I guess valuable 20 year old, agricultural, 400hp cars are probably a bit of a worry.

like i said above my s3 has been timed to 100 at 12 seconds, probably could improve the launch a touch.

Just been to Jabbasport yesterday to drive their Audi A3 quattro IHI'd.
It's running an IHI p20 housing, with a large front mounted intercooler.
Apparently it's been toned down abit to 330bhp (due to the weaker engine of the 180 bhp motor)

The power was very impressive. There was a lot of hissing and chirping noises. I'm not a huge fan of turbo noises, and was even less of a fan to the massively droney exhaust they had fitted.

Another reservation I had was the turbo lag. It comes so much later than my remapped s3. It's also more progressive, so you don't get the kick up the back as much.
However, Mike (at Jabba) informed me that he also does an IHI with a smaller housing p18.
This reduces lag abit (but not to the standard of the k04), but at the expense of top end power.
This to me seems like a better route, and in the majority of everyday driving it is the torque that I'll be using.

Also, according to Mike, Front mounted intercooler not necessary on an s3. Fitting on means that boost can be run even higher.

Another concern I did have, was the required fitment of a 100 cell sports cat. It's a big round thing which looks dangerously like it'll ground out over sleeping policemen, and also reading around, it appears that ppl have had problems with emissions for MOT's and warning lights coming on.

Comments on sports cats anyone?

Im using a p18, and yes there is lag - its a bigger turbo, you can expect nothing less! By definition you will shift the power band further up the revs - you cant get away from this fact.

It also depends on how you apply the power. If you want a sudden KICK, then take it slowly upto the beginning of the power band, and punch it - send you catapulting forwards at one heck of a rate!!

Sports cats - I'm using a milltek 100cell, and my emissions were only slightly higher than a stock 150bhp 1.8T! Theres no problem here!

you cant realistically expect to fit a bigger turbo and keep the same bottom end power as you have with the K04 - But what you do get is little to no drop off higher up the revs!

Look at this:

Also take a look at the graph I posted earlier in this thread to see how boost comes in on bigger turbos.

Another note, Mike prefers to map his cars progressively, but he can map it to suit your needs within reason if you like the "kick".

I'd like to know what cat he's got fitted to that car as my high flow cat is smaller than standard. Also no emission issues for me either.

I've got the 100 cell Rosi cat. It does sit low and, with the car lower, does just touch aggressive sleeping policemen. Its because of the prop. It cant go any higher.

Chris.

hi guys , my car was the first 4wd s3/tt that jabba had done with ihi,the standard intercoolers are restrictive and you get a bit of a pressure drop across them which means that you have to run the turbo alot harder to get the requested boost.I have a 100 cell race cat and have found no problem with clearance over speed humps etc and there is some pretty nasty ones where i live. Also found that the emissons where actually better than the old cat!As so far as lag goes it's not too bad ,it's a big turbo on a 1.8 and your not going to get any better whichever way you look at it.

Rich, Ryanc (and anyone else fitted with IHI, running over 300 bhp),
How long has your big turbo been fitted?
How many miles have you done during that time?
And have you had any problems with your cars since (large or small)?

I'm just trying to gauge the reliability of an IHI'd s3. For instance, would an IHI kitted s3 withstand regular trackdays/hard driving?

As for clearance on race cats? Ryanc, which race cat are you using? Because the guys at Jabba sport showed me a really large round one that sticks out about 2 inches below the car. Exactly where it would make an acquaintance with speed bumps.

Cheers.

ihi'd for about a year ,although i had a big turbo on for a bit before that.milage probably about 5k.
Only failure was the dbw throtle body although that was nothing to do with ihi. I have a very large sports cat fitted(large jabba) ,loads of speed bumps round me and i have no problems although car is only lowered a touch.

had the IHI for over 18 months now, and not a single power/turbo related issue...

Rich

Thanks Ryanc, Rich,
So, should I do it? I'm still very worried about reliability.

go for it mate, vag build them strong.

Thanks Ryanc.

Did you have your clutch replaced too? The reason I asked is because I've just spoken to AMD, and
they tell me that the clutch and Haldex rear transmission is very likely to fail with the extra
power. They do a stage 4 conversion that is very similar to the IHI upgrade.
They have apparently had 3 -4 haldex transmission replacements in the past year. Scary.

Also, do you guys (Ryanc/Rich) have a larger intercooler and oil coolers fitted?

uprated clutch, large intercooler ,no oil cooler.
EIP use the standard haldex on the 600bhp r32 twin turbo.
Remember the ihi is water and oil cooled.

Hi Ryanc,
I tried to pm you but your mailbox is full. Is there any chance I could give you call to chat about your turbo conversion? PM me if so.

Thanks,

Glen
