Guys, I know this is a bit of a long shot, but, I thought Id try anyway...

Im currently doing my dissertation for university. I am concentrating on the planning process that professional traders use within their firms, and how they manage their staff. I am defining a professional trader as business owners such as joiners, electricians, mechanics etc. Basically anything which takes 3-4 years to serve an apprenticeship in!

So far I have conducted 5 interviews with different owners, but to be honest I could do with a few more to try and beef up my evidence. Each interview has lasted between 30 - 45 minutes.

I need to look at companies who employ staff, not including themselves or other family members.

No personal questions are asked, and the questions are quite straightforwards. A few examples include:

What were the main motivations for you going into business?
In what ways do you analyse your competitors?
Do you undertake any performance evaluation with your staff and how do you do it?
etc etc.

I think its a pretty interesting topic and the concerns of professional traders are often neglected in most research papers. I know a lot of you guys will probably struggle to attract staff etc so hopefully it might help get a better understanding of a business which is extremely common in the UK.

I know this probably wont work, but it is difficult to get people to take part. If anybody would consider helping me, would it be possible to send a PM. I can be pretty flexible with regards to interview times and I am willing to travel anywhere in the Edinburgh area. I need to really do the interviews over the next 2 weeks though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers for reading this!

Can't help you myself, Steve, but best of luck with the dissertation. I did mine in 83/84, & mine was about the model policy & commercial future of what was still then called British Leyland (latterly MG Rover).

I schlepped all over the country interviewing directors, former directors, trades union general sectretaries & so on. I concluded it with a prediction that the company would continue to lose money (it did), decline in sales and production capacity (it did), be taken over by a foreign competitor (it was) but still, in all probability, go bankrupt (it did).

And for that, they gave me a poxy 2.2!

If you did around in the archives of the William Robertson Building in George Square , you might even find a copy!

Sounds like an interesting topic Jeff! I have managed to get 5 participants so far which isnt too bad as I have a lot of information, but Im a wee bit ahead of schedule so I was just looking to try and get a few more and see if I can make my arguement a bit more convincing.

Im actually at Heriot Watt, so I dont know if Im able to have a look round for the dissertation.

I hope they give me a good grade though. Im going for a first but Im a bit unsure if Im going to quite make it.

I bet MG Rover wish they had followed a bit of advice though!

Cheers

Steve

Good luck when the final year comes. I cant wait to finish now. 4th year is a bit much after doing 3 before hand but never mind.

Cheers,

Steve

I can't get used to the idea that final year students in Edinburgh run Audis. In my day (yeah, yeah, Granddad!), we had to make do with a Lothian Buses Ridacard.

Ha well i did save quite hard while i had my Pug 309GTI 2 years ago. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Got to stop buying stuff for the A4 now though as i need to buy a house. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Anyway i will stop leading this topic astray!

Cheers.

They'd been invented, but were still only known about in the civilised world, so I guess you wouldn't have heard of them in Wales: /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

7 or 14 Jeff? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

I hit a bit of luck with mine...

My family own a bodyshop, so I drive on our motor trade insurance - I have social limitations up to a 1.8 diesel, but for a charge of £200 a year I can drive my 1.9 Tdi, my dads 2.8 BMW and our van (a 1.9 diesel). So insurance is dirt cheap as Im insured on practically any car we own or drive through the garage.

We used to lease the A3, and I drove it for the whole duration - we got a really good deal on it. Then they bought the car for me for my 21st, but Im hoping to pay some contribution as I start a not-bad job in September. Think the deal was ok, might have paid a little bit more than we should have, but I know the history of the car and I know its been well looked after and immaculate.

If we didnt have the bodyshop though, there would be no chance of me driving it!

Its ok, Im not really having much luck anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I knew it was a difficult subject to research, especially with interviews! I thought the forum might work because I dont like cold calling people, but never mind!

Maybe more people posting might make the thread more attractive haha!

What body shop do your family own if you dont mind me asking?

You should get a discount scheme for Audi-sport members!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Ace Car Repair, in Liberton. The old beat up premises haha! We need a new garage! We do MOTs and servicing as well.

The discount scheme would work, but we have far too much work just now. We do all the work for fleet companies, but they keep throwing stuff at us. Bodyshops are finding it really hard to cope just now!

Do you know the place?

I know where Liberton is but never seen Ace Car Repair there.

I am based in Haddington but used to stay in Bonaly if you know it.

Cheers.

Yeah I know Bonaly. I live in Balerno, so Im not too far from there.

The garage is right on a busy junction at the foot of Liberton Brae. If you keep carrying up the road you get to the Kings Buildings, then going straight through the cross roads will eventually take you to the Causewayside? I dont know if you are based at the KB or not!

Did you go to Balerno High School as you will have probably known one of my mates.

I dont get what u mean
