It's been a while since I've used the forum. Used to be a frequent poster in the 8P section. Previously owned a A3 2.0 tdi then and S3. I have since bought an A5 3.0 tdi

Looking into buying a 2001 S3 to have as weekend/winter toy as I may be selling the A5 to fund house renovation.
It's black has the black leather and white alcantara interior. It's the facelift model with I think the AMK engine.
It's from the girlfriends neighbour and he hadn't got a price in mind. It's only done 80000miles and has 12 months MOT.
What should I be looking to pay. I've had a look on autotrader but the prices vary so much

In needs a rear spring so was thinking of putting a set of apex springs on.

As Dave has asked- is it standard? Also what sort of extras are with it...heated seats/sunroof/armrest etc?

What's the service history like also? I realise the the car is on a low mileage of 80k - but that isn't necessarily always great as it could have been sitting there for a while and so a full service including a full fluid change and oil pick up pick would definitely be recommended on it.

Have a drive of it as well if you can, because clutches aren't cheap and the bushes have probably seen better days - especially if the rear spring already needs replacing.

Also have a good look round the paint work for any paint bubbling - roof rails and behind the front arches are the worse. The Audi 12 year corrosion warranty will be coming to an end very shortly if it hasn't already on the 2001 model.

S3s are going for anything from £2.5k for rough examples to £6k+ for showroom condition ones so the answers above will put it better price bracket on what it's approximately worth. A few pics would also be great though :)

ps also loving the A5, shame you have to sell her but at least you're still staying with Audi :kissmyrings:

I have recently helped a friend find an S3. We looked at several all over the UK, modified and standard. Searching through, autotrader, pistonheads, gumtree, ebay, ad traders and forums we found some nice examples but as kwistof says the prices seemed to jump around from £2,800 for a ropey one to £5,500 for a minter. We finally found one the other side of london from a small private garage out in the sticks. The car was a 2003 BAM with 80k on the clock with history and a recent belt change. The car was unmodified and very clean and checked out fine. It didn't disappoint either on the test drive, it was a mint example and after a quick chat my friend snapped it up for 4k. I have a 2001 s3 and i bought that standard a year and a half ago for 4k too and that was completely standard and in very good condition from a dealer. So that gives you a rough idea on pricing hopefully. However if you can pick it up cheap you could be laughing!

Love the A5, the s3 is worth what your willing to pay, is it standard? if so at a guess 3 - 4 k...

Yeah it's standard apart from a stage one map.
Having been owned by someone I know for the last couple of years I know it's history and done limited mileage.

As I said it's got a stage 1 map
Also has centre armrest, double din headunit (is that an optional extra?)

It's got service history. I would give it a full service any way for peace of mind. Will look into the oil pickup.
Been out for a drive and it drives well.
Body work is good just needs the rear bumper painting on corner ( had a quote for £150)
Also needs a good polish but that's Sunday morning job.
The only little bubble I can see is on the strip above the rear number plate recess.

Gutted to sell the a5 but needs must and all that. Once house is done will get another maybe.

Cheers for comments. As you have also confirmed the prices to vary a lot.

Here's a couple of pics.

Best interior (not that I am biased) and looks like a very early facelift so should be on the older road tax setup (bit cheaper)

Nice looking car :)

I do love the interior. When you say very early facelift has anything else changed on them.

Well I decided to buy the car. Took it without the MOT and I'm going to do the work myself.

It needs two rear springs, front top mount, 3 CV boots. Rear discs and pads. So all in all very little. Was gona drop a set of Apex springs on anyway so will kill two birds with one stone.

Paid £2600 for it. So for £3000 I will have a 2001 tidy S3 with 80k on the clock.

I've told myself I'm not going to mod it. Let's see how long that lasts.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure , but when I changed just my rear springs to eibach as they were broke it shreaded the inside of my rear tyres! I then went to Sutton auto factors and bought the standard ( labelled up as Audi TT) springs changed them and solved the problem on my next set of rears tyres worn evenly.

i liked that a5 I met you at aitp I think last year? Did you get shark to remap it in the end? I was there in guzzy's stage 2 r tech s3, trust me you will modify your s3 ...... At the minute your old a5 is quicker than 2001 s3. ......
