No sound from front speakers - Chorus stereo

Hi, I've just bought a 2009 A3 Sportback with the Chorus stereo. I have an issue in that I can't get sound out of the main front speakers, I only get sound from the tweeters in the door pillars. I have taken the head unit out and have checked the connections and everything is fine. Is the head unit faulty, or could it be something else?

Welcome to the site.

Check the door pillar rubbers for any broken wires, maybe they've been unplugged behind the door cards when work was completed, maybe check all balance settings although if tweeters are working then front doors should aswell afaik, possibly faulty radio but check wiring 1st before condemning.
 
Thanks for the welcome, and the reply. I should have mentioned that I've tried balance and tone settings. I have read I should check the for pillar rubbers but couldn't see a way of removing them. Do I literally just pry them away from the door and pillar?
 
They basically have expanding plastic locating clips, so you have to squeeze them inward & pull outward at the same time, once one side is removed, it makes it easier to get other side of aswell, as no compression to hold in place as such.
 
Managed to get to the wires but all look as new. I guess it would point to a faulty head unit? The quadlock connector only has the vertical brown and black connectors. The space for horizontal connectors is empty. Does this sound right?

As I understand it, there's only a single feed to each side in the front, so if the tweeters work, it can't be a headunit fault. In other words, the door speakers and tweeters take their supply from the same terminals on the back of the HU. As you have checked the door connectors, the connections on the actual speakers and the speakers themselves must be the next suspects.

I am talking about standard non-Bose setup BTW.
 
Thanks for that information. I guess that would involve taking the door cards off then. I've rung the garage who use an audio specialist nearby. They're hopefully sending him out to take a look, as this is now a bit out of my depth :uhm:
 
Door cards aren't as hard to remove as they may look - but someone who's used to it will have 'em off in no time (so to speak). There's a thread on here somewhere if you ever fancy having a go at it.
 
BTW to answer your Q - the horizontal connectors are for stuff like CD changers, ,factory phone/bluetooth, amps etc so their absence shouldn't be the reason for your issue. You didn't say, but I assume you don't have Bose.

Sorry, I didn't see this reply. Thanks for that. I've now just had them fixed. It was the speakers that had blown. No I don't have Bose, they were Blaupunkt speakers.

You sure it wasn't just the fader turned fully to the rear? I've had cars with radios for over 50 years and never had two speakers go at the same time!:uhm:

There is no fader on mine (as I don't have rear speakers) The audio tech someone had a go at fixing them, they shoved some card in-between one of the speaker supports and the cone. It worked whilst he was fiddling but was knackered. I've never heard of 2 blowing which is why I was unsure what the problem was, but turns out it was both!
