Hey
right I don't want to sound stupid here but I don't know much about engine sides of things.
my a3 struggles to start when cold occasionally it turns over a few times but when it's hot
its worse sometimes turning over for a while. I had a audi specialist look at it and they said
it would be my fuel pump on way out ?
So my question is does my fuel pump need to be a a3 tdi one or could I fit a different fuel
pump ? Eg a bigger engined one ?? As I want to get more power eventually ?? Or would a standard fuel pump be ok ??
Any help much Appreaciated
cheers

Need more details bud, I presume you have an A3 tdi? Exact model, age and mileage? Condition of your car battery, when did you last change the MAF(airflow) sensor and has the CTS(coolant temperature sensor) been changed at all? All these things can effect starting, and the fuel pump is the most expensive part to go wrong!

Ahh ok :)
its a 1998 model a3 tdi 1.9 110 bhp
96'000 miles I've only owned the care a couple of months
so it's not had either changed since I've owned it :/
but it reaches temperature at normal rate on dash board but
I'm guessing that there's 2 sensors for temp ?? And do you recon I should change both of those
first just to narrow it down ?? But if it is the fuel pump would I need to use a a3 tdi one for my year or could I use say a a4 2.5 tdi one ?? Cheers nick

I'm pretty sure you can only use the fuel pump made for 1.9 non PD engines, but I stand corrected on this.

Mileage isn't too high, but for the age, I'd try the CTS, I've changed one on my Passat TDI, and it started much better, I'm currently on 208k miles. You say a specialist thinks it's the fuel pump, so it may well be that, but I'm not to familiar with the 110bhp unit if I'm being honest. They are usually pretty reliable to be fair.

correct, PD is a totally different setup.

before changing the fuel pump I would check the pump timing which is far more likely to be the issue.
Do a bit of research online for 'tdi timing graph' using vagcom.

It's easy to set the pump timing, a little advanced will work best for performance and economy.
