Hi all,

Driving home last night one of the illumination bulbs behind the speedo went out, does anyone know if these are conventional bulbs or LEDs and how easy these are to change?

i dont think you can just swap them
there the tiny ones soldered to the board
im sure someone that knows 100% will be along soon.

Surface mount led's, that's a ******, can be swapped, but has to be sure of being correct type or may shine brighter than rest & over time will **** you off, could grab another cluster & swap out, but I would go to audi & ask them to consider goodwill tbh as its a 2010 car so only out of warranty this year & overall that fault is very rare & hardly expected, argue the toss.

Thanks for that, my local Audi dealer is only a mile up the road, I'll pop in after work and see what they have to say.

I got in the car Monday to go to the dealer about this and all was working well. Now, one week later and this still seems to have cured itself. I hope it stays this way.

check the plug connections, fuses, and earth points. also if there is a dimmer switch check that too

Be aware that if you have the headlight switch set to the "Off" position, the instrument lighting comes on automatically in bright light but then goes off when the sun goes in to warn you that you have the lights turned off and need to turn them on as it goes dark....
So you will see the instruments lighting go on and off as you drive between bright sunlight and shade. Its a bit of a pain really but that's how its designed....

If you have the light switch on "Auto" then the nstrument lighting stays on all the time......

Thanks Alfie, I was aware of that but the issue I had only affected one of the bulbs in the speedo, all the others stayed on. Since my original post all has been working well so I hope it was just a temporary glitch.

Well since my original post back in August, this problem has been getting worse with the fuel gauge illumination also now going out intermittently. My local dealer diagnosed a faulty instrument display cluster at a replacement cost of £960 including fitting.

When I questioned the cost of this and the fact the car was only 3 months out of warranty when this first started, they did get back to me and offered a 20% reduction as a good will gesture.

Now I may be expecting too much but that's still £768 and that doesn't seem enough help to me, so I contacted Audi Customer Services just before Xmas and explained all to them. They have now got back to me saying they have spoken to the dealer and that the 20% is the best they can offer me!

To say I'm not very happy is an understatement, this being my first experience of a supposedly prestige brand, so unless anyone has any ideas, my days of Audi ownership may not last much longer. :crying:

Faulty Display

I maybe able to source another & get it installed & mileage corrected, but you'd have to drive down south to have all this done.

Shocking audi respond like this tbh with only 3 months out of warranty.

I have exactly the same issue and also an A5 2010 - just owned for 2 weeks now. Exact same position too!

Just a quick update on this issue. I sent my speedo off to cluster repairs uk and one week later it is back in the car and all working well, total price just under £170 - a bit different to the £960 that Audi wanted to charge me!
