LCD display p****** me off!

Iv had a wonder round the forum and can't seem to find a thread which relates to the problem i currently have with my LCD display on my S3 8L 1999


All the pixels and display is fine with no weird lines etc and the top part is perfect displaying OK and the rest of it however, the bottom part (temp and trip) seems to have a mind of its own, it's either off, switches on and constantly flashes randomly, it even shows the correct figures and measures but just can't seem to stay switched on....??

Any ideas?
 
Sounds like faulty wiring, I'd suggest taking the cluster out and refitting it.
 
All of the bottom functions are controlled by the toggle switch and button on the right hand stalk. I would look at that first it sound as though its getting knocked or has a wiring issue.
 
I know the previous owner had replaced the cluster but I think he did it himself. Iv owned the car for about 3 weeks and was fine until last weekend..... :-(

Sounds like not an easy DIY job
 
my track car does this from time to time.

I assume it's a stalk issue, as sometimes it's on, sometimes it's off, and sometimes, the screen is on but the controls on the stalk do nothing at all
 
The button on the bottom of the stalk turns the display on and off. Could it be getting caught?

Definitely sounds like that is the culprit then. Bottom button should at least toggle the display on and off if working.au be worth chasing the wire along from stalk to ensure all connections are secure.

Any guides on how to carry this out re the stalk?
 
I did a DIS retrofit on an A4 B6 and if its similar to ours the stalk is basically I mini module of its own. I would guess either faulty connection or just that the stalk itself is not happy. If you can acquire a cheap second hand stalk I would just swap it out as it shouldn't be too hard its just a case of removing the wheel piece by piece till you can access the stalk.

z00bz, I see you are in Leicester, if you pop to the Lion Garage speak to Chris (he has a yellow A4), im not sure if he is still there or not, as he was looking to move to the Nottingham branch, but he will look after you there.

Im in Birmingham mate but in Leicester a fair bit as in laws live there.
 
And I am slap bang in the middle :) I have used the lion garage in Hinckley to do my haldex service earlier in the year and they were good.
 
Wow, we should plan to go up to the Wednesday Cov meet 1 nite :) yes lion garage are decent, prices can be a little steep at times

Yeh, I have met Prawn, Jardo, Jojo, <tuffty/> and badger5 (Bill) but would be good to meet closer people too.
 
Guys, let us know if you want to do a Cov meet, we can defo sort one for us all to turn up in force :)

I was practically the first one there yesterday, turning up @8 in the rain with fading light!
