Hi all,

After some thoughts really on what you would say is the issue.

Having had my cambelt service done Mid june (water pump inc) -Awesome GTI

I have not really done much mileage(~1600 since 14/06/13) to get the temperature up its around 14-15mile round trip to work.

I attempted a trip at weekend from Blackburn to Blackpool however by the time I had reached Preston the warning light had come on for overheated.

Following this I did a few quick checks:
  • Radiator fan = not on
  • Multimeter on Radiator fan = no power
  • Fuses (drivers side/engine) = all okay
  • Coolant hose to radiator (top) = Very hot
  • Radiator = Cold
  • Coolant hose from radiator (bottom) = Cold
  • Bleeder hose into the filler bottle = Drip feeding
My conclusion would be that the waterpump is knackered, has anyone else had similar issues?

Thanks in advance!!!

waterpump should of been changed with the cambelt.

Did you check the green fuse in the little tray on top of the battery?

Also there is a thermo valve in the block that opens to let water go through the radiator, was or has that been changed? put in the wrong way?

Yeah the waterpump was changed then but with only doing 7 or so miles before turning the engine back off it would only just be getting to temp I would have thought.

Yeah all the fuses on the battery were fine.

Wasn't aware of the thermo valve. What should it look like in the correct position i will check on my lunch.

Thanks for the quick reply!

It could be the thermostat stuck closed? I had the opposite where it was stuck open so it never really warmed up. It was always running cold hovering at 60-70

very rare to stuck closed but it can and does happen

Thanks for the advice! Ill get down and dirty tonight hopefully get to the bottom of this. :)

Afternoon!

After giving a brief explanation to the misses on how a thermostat works, we managed to get the new one fitted without removing the alternator (thanks to her small hands!). Following this I ran the engine idling for ~30min. With no warning lights however the engine did move up to around the 110 mark (within 10min) and then sit steady there.

The radiator fan still wasn't kicking in at this point however the radiator was getting warm but not hot. Could the needle on the dash be offset? therefore 110 mark being around the 90/thermostat opening.

**Also the thermostat we removed was put in a cup of boiling water without opening, so that's a good sign.***

The cars temp guage should be at 90 all the time when warm. On a warm day, my cooling fan comes on before the temp only goes above 90c. Could possibly be the temp sensor?

Went to replace the temp sensor today. Had the joy of attempting to put a square in a circular hole!

back to the shop to get the correct temp sensor however wont be able to look at the car now until probably next week due to work.

Fingers crossed this will have it back to nice smooth sailing!

How expensive are Audi!

059919501A - Water temp sender. = £37.98 and is a special order part.

I can get it from german auto spares and a 5L G12+ for £39.95

So I have now changed the thermostat, temp sensor and coolant.

It doesnt want to complain about overheating however the needle on the dash likes to sit at 110 still. Giving the car a 15hour cool down this morning I noticed that as i turn the key to get the electric functions (before engine start) the dial for temp moves and sits just above 80.

IMAG0095

From memory it never used to but was wondering if someone could confirm where their needle sits first thing in the morning?

Thanks! David

It should sit bang on 60, as the engine temp will of course be pretty much the same as outside, it took my car about 10 minutes to move up to 80 this morning.

Yep. Mine sits hardover left (just under 60) when cold / first start of the day. It doesn't appear to move between ignition key out and key turned to electrics on / first start (as opposed to fuel gauge which swings over instantly to fuel level) when key turned to electrics on.

Yeah that was my thoughts. Since the needle is sitting at 80 (picture above) when cold I would say my dash is offset. If you take the +20 into account the needle sitting at 110 would relate to 90 actual temp.

The only way I can think of confirming this is through the ecu, since I dont have a VAG-COM the only other option I can think is OBDII (my friend has one). I know this won't read everything but if it does read coolant temp would it be accurate?

If you have climate control you can view the engine temp on there.

Press recirc and UP together, display will change to 1c. Use temp +/- control to make it display 49c then press recirc again. Display should change to engine temperature.

Wow I didn't know that.

:O Now that is pretty cool, shame I don't have climate control.
