I have recently purchased a 2003 Audi a4 1.9tdi quattro, however the hazard lights stay on even when the keys arent in the ignition. Also the central locking isnt working off the key fob and i have the immo light flashing

The things i have done are:

New (Second hand CCM) and coded in - i think i have coded it in correctly

New cluster - However i am unsure if these are any good as i cant get vag tacho to talk to them and retrieve the ssk code or correct the mileage, not sure if the eeprom has been deleted

Checked Central electric module (J519) - they turn off when i unplug the 10 and 32 pin plugs, tried another one and it still done it, so i guess it cant be this? the unit was removed from a none quattro car and had a few pins missing compared to mine, but i guess as it was still doing it then is cant be this?

Checked alarm siren and taken apart - The batteries have leaked and gone all over the pcb, not sure if this would cause it, but at the moment everything is pointing me into the direction of the alarm system...

Checked and removed the hazard switch and checked fuses and no change

I keep researching and i am going round in circles at the moment and i dont want to start replacing things that wont make any difference. I am however going to buy another set of clocks and see if these will make any difference...

Has anyone had similar problems and had any results in repairing it?

Thanks in advance

dod you replace the ccm under seat or cem under dash ?

does the c locking work from the key ?

i have replaced the CCM under the passenger seat and tried another CEM from a friends car, however, his one had fewer pins than mine his part number was 8e0 907 279 j or q and mine is 8e0 907 279 e but this didnt seem to make a difference anyway.

and no the central locking doesnt work off the key

you could have a broken wire or 2 in the rubber boot between car and door very common

was your mates CEM from a b6 or b7 ?

have you ran a scan for any fault codes

sounds daft but have you tried to resync the remotes ?

where abouts is this wire? would this wire be causing my hazards to stay on constantly? they go off for abit until i shut or open the door or start the car.

The CEM was from a b6, exactly the same apart from his wasnt a quattro and was a 52 plate and not 03 like mine...

I have used vag com and it comes up with a few codes, but nothing points me to the right direction or jumps out at me as being something wrong, it does come up with alarm and alarm being activiated by drivers door switch or something.

No havent re sync keys, how is this done?

thanks

Open the door. Your see a rubber boot. Pull it back and check the wires for breaks .

And yes it could, wiring problems could cause any funny issue. But the flashing imob light would suggest the cluster isnt coded to the keys immobiliser chip.

Ok ill check that later today, should i check all of the doors wiring? Alot of water also comes out from the bottom of the drivers side back door when it has been raining, not sure if its worth checking behind the door card to see if it has fried anything?

i think you could be right with the immo light as the keys do need coding to the cluster, this could also explain why the central locking isnt working, but again, i couldnt get vag tacho to talk to the cluster, think it was an old version of vag tacho, ill buy a new cluster and newest version of vag tacho today

I found your thread the other day and thats why i started looking around the CEM (J519 as vag com knows it as) the hazards stop flashing when i unplug either the 10 or 32 pin plugs on it, but then it stops all of the outside lights and window wipers from working aswel, however, when i plug it back in the hazards start again and they stay on continuously for about 5-10minutes then turn off, but then turn on again once i turn the ignition on or open the door.

I have taken the unit out and removed it from the plastic box but i cant notice anything and it seemed dried. Like i have said, i tried my friends one and it still done the same thing, although his did have less pins and a different part number, im not sure if this is to do with it not working or not?

Did you ever get yours sorted Alex?

Well rain does run down to the bottom of the door and out the drain hole. But this is only a small amount. If the window seal is perished or split then yes excess water could cause condensation and cause corrostion and oter problems. So yes i would check that out and all door looms.

Did you open up the ECM and take a look at the circuit board?
Mine appeared to be dry from the outside but upon opening it there was water in there.

I dried it all out and put it back in the car - the issue was solved straight away.
The wet had corroded part of the board slightly so didn't think it would still work 100% - but up-to now its been fine.

I would put money on your ECM being at fault.

Where abouts are you located? If your in the NW I dont mind you trying my ECM.

im thinking you have either 1 fault causeing lock and flasher problem the flashing could be the alarm going off as you have the code and the lock switch could make the alarm go off and make the c locking not work

or 2 faults 1 with ecm and 1 with door lock switch as the ecm doesnt run the locks
can you rescan and post codes ?

I was thinking it could be an alarm problem, i have removed the alarm siren and the batteries had leaked and gone all over the PCB, i have cleaned it off with ipa and i am going to do the AA battery repair on it later today.

Although i think with regards to the central locking not working, i think the key needs pairing to the cluster as it does lock and unlock all the doors by putting the key in the door and the red light flashes but then stays solidly lit...

I have saved the last log i done and will post it later today

Yea i have opened it up and when i did, i didn't notice any water or corroded parts. I have since taken it into work for a closer inspection and to re flow some of the components, but i doubt this would make any difference, could be one of the components have broken down. I guess the ECM needs to be an exact P/N match in order to cancel it out being that?

Unfortunately im as south as you can get :(

and no the central locking doesnt work off the key

i was going off that what you said
so key in door works the locks ?

if so try resync put key in ignition turn on enging off
press lock unlock lock unlock
take key out close door try see if it works

already tried re syncing keys and it doesnt do anything... think the key needs pairing to the cluster in order to get the central locking working.

Im not overly fussed about central locking not working, just want to get down to why the hazards keep flashing, but they dont flash at the same speed as the hazards, its alot quicker and then turning the hazard switch on slows it down and if i put either indicator on its as if theres not problem until they cancel.

Cant get my head round it at the moment, but ill put up my vag results in abit

its defo aa alarm problem quick flash like alarm going off
slows down when you use hazards as it should
id be looking at the door lock micro switch
but im sure its a full door lock needed as switch is built in

its worth a try checking the door loom still as the wired do break

Thats what i am thinking and the alarm siren looked knackered when i took it apart so couldn't tell if alarm was going off or not, i am going to replace batteries on that and see if it gets the alarm working.

One of the faults i got on vag com was saying alarm activated by door contact or something on drivers door along with a faulty alarm siren, which i guess is the batteries leaking

and the door part is the micro switch in the lock

not working or wireing fault

ok, so your thoughts are with the alarm causing the indicators to stay permanently lit?

I always thought that the alarm turns off after a while and this does that but then comes back on as soon as you start it or open the door, i guess thats the whole point?

UPDATE:

I have bought a new CEM but still hasnt sorted it and bought a new set of clocks and this hasnt worked either. Bought vag tacho 3.01 and i can not get it to read the info in the clocks, just says software version unknow - access denied.

Anyone got any ideas?

Anyone got any ideas?
yes.

petrol>matches>car>insurance claim

:D

but seriously no, sounds like you have swapped all electronical units, i suggest you save your self any more cash buying stuff here and there and just get a auto electrician to track the fault, they aint as expensive as you think. and will trace the fault in a fraction of time and proberly cost that it will take you

i would find one near to you but your about me page is blank so cant help on locating one

i have never taken a car to a garage since ive been driving and i dont want to start now...

I think i have come to a conclusion of switching all the unnecessary functions off in the CCM as i believe everything is switched on as standard and this is where all the alarm functions are stored i.e. flash on when arming/unarming alarm system, activating/deactivating alarm system etc...

when you have the CEM unplugged do you still get this problem ?

i still do think its the alarm at fault poss the micro switch

when i unplug the 10 pin connector on the CEM it stops.

I have sinced switched the entire alarm system off and now it seems to have solved the constant flashing when the ignition is on..

But now the hazard lights stay on when the engine is running and the hazard switch is dimmly lit when ignition is off, any ideas?

I have ran a full scan and got the following codes:

clear it all and re run the scan
some may be old

how have you switched the alarm system off ?

Agreed 90% of those are irrelevant. Clear codes make the car run though the issues your having and see what comes up. I can bet you your find the problem. Its all electrical and will leave a "paper trail" if you like. There are a few that stand out but you cant tell if its the real problem or not.
Good luck

cleared codes about a million times but these are the ones that keep pop up. and yes i have turned the complete alarm system off now and it seems like i am getting somewhere now, but hazards are flashing normally when engine is running but i cant switch them off...

yea thats the first thing i always do and then i research it.

but i cant really find much tbh on those codes. To be fair i clear them and they go but then they come back again once ive left it a few hours or if i turn over the engine

ok gimme a while i know how to search the codes via rosstech website, ill post back which a page for every code
unless of course its a stupid one like supply voltage +b too low, just means youve had the battery disconnected or one like the alarm set off by door etc

ok here goes, might be a massive fail or could answer some questions, or at least open new questions leading to the ultimate fix

ok going over that i see two faults occurring over the scan

1. 01317 - Control Module in Instrument Cluster (J285)
2.00474 - Control Module for Immobilizer

but i also see

00457 - Control Module for Network (J519)
01312 - Powertrain Data Bus

and then 18258 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ECU

then i see it skipped the airbags,

so my advice here. and some one may correct me and i might be miles from the issue but here goes

im finding it hard to believe all those control modules are dead or broken

but heres my finding with another dead module,
my abs module was dead, and prevented me reading ANY other module unless it was unplugged,

but im starting to think your ecu could well be the issue here,

unless there's a break in a wire that goes to the module that control the immob and cluster (which are on the same circuit i believe)

as the fault codes keeps telling you cluster and immob isnt communicating and lastly the control module for the network (ecu?)

and then also stating powertrain data bus missing message from ecu.

so two faults stating the ecu and the fact nothing wants to communicate.

can you scan a car with the ecu disconnected?

i do hope this helps

Thanks for taking the time to research those codes for me I appreciate it.

I should add, that I cleared the majority of them after I ran that initial scan and a lot of the faults might be because I’ve unplugged different control modules and the clocks before running that full scan… It was late when I posted and wasn’t thinking straight, so will run another scan later today and see what pops up.

Just to add, I have tried vag tacho 5 and I still cannot connect to the RB4 crypto cluster to read the pin to match the key to the cluster. However I have managed to pair the key to the CCM so I now have the central locking working off the key.

Just to illiterate, that I have turned the complete alarm system off which has stopped the hazards from flashing quickly as if the alarm was going off, but I now have the hazards flashing normally when the engine is running and I cannot switch them off from the switch

Oh my word, this could be a simple issue or a few things.

Did you replace the alarm siren? May be worth while doing so you can confirm if the alarm is going off when the hazards flash quickly.
In terms of the lights flashing when the engine is running;
Have you removed the long plug under where the CEM is located by the pedals? Do the lights stop flashing?
Also, try removing the hazard light switch - this didn't do anything for me, but could possibly rule out a faulty switch.

I think its going to be a case of trial and error - have you checked the door wiring looms for any splits?

I haven’t replaced the alarm siren yet, I didn’t think that would cause many issues? I have switched the alarm system off now and they’re not flashing quickly anymore… Im not overly fussed about having no alarm at the moment.

I have removed the grey 32 pin from the CEM and that stops it, if I leave that plugged in and remove the black 10 pin plug on the CEM that also stops it, but I lose all exterior lights. I bought another CEM from ebay, but problem still there, so I doubt they’re both fudged…

Also removed hazard switch and it carrys on flashing, so I think I can rule it out being a faulty hazard switch.

Ive checked all door wiring looms and all looks ok, apart from the thick brown wire on the drivers door between the door and the car, it has the plastic sheath torn, but theres nothing to short out on and no broken wires, looks like a ground from the AWG of the wire

the brown is indeed the ground,

i think if you try what i said you may get some luck, but i dont know if you can unplug the ecu and still scan the car.

and not to slate you alex, but you just suggest to try every thing he has already posted he tried,

i have also pin pointed and maybe even stated your problem, ecu or airbags. this may be blocking you from reading any modules. just like i explained about my abs module it blocked me reading and clearing codes.

my thoughts here are if the key isnt coded correctly and the ecu hasn't been told as it looks like neither the cluster or any other module including the ecu are talking to each other, when i had key troubles, my key light would flash on the dash and the indicators would also flash even with the engine running.

like i said also. call an auto electrian that also has vag com and go from there. and to your comment it dosnt envolve taking it to a garage, they come to you

Done abit more work today, managed to get the flashers turned off..

However, ive only been able to do this by snipping one of the wires on the green connector on the back of the clocks, this has turned the indicators, handbrake light and full beam and head light lights off the cluster aswel but they all work on the outside still.

The wires in questions on the green connector are T32/17 and T32/18 but neither of these show up on the wiring diagrams so im not sure what they are for, but it seems to have stopped the problem for the time being... but i need to try chase this wire back to where the source

Check all the wires running along the sill on the passenger side. Look for any wires with a green tinge.

Again, what would a green tinge indicate?

I pinned T32/15,16,17 (blue plug on instrument cluster) pins out to T32b/13 ( Grey plug on CEM) And T32/16 (blue plug on instrument cluster) pins out to T32b/12 (Grey plug on CEM)

Pins 12 and 13 on the cem is high and low can bus, I don't if that has any relevance to my problems, but those pin out results seem like they are shorting out... And I'm not 100% sure what those pins are on the blue instrument cluster connector as they are not mentioned on any of the wiring diagrams I have seen
