dsg gearchange cover

some plonker in a bmw x5 hit me from behind and my car needed a new bumper.While in the bodyshop i was driving a brand new s line,i don't if anyone agrees with me that the gearchange surround looks cheaper compared the older chrome version
 
I have the leather Surround on My DSG, before that was the plastic shutter type ?
 
I'm not saying that the leather is bad it's the surround that in my opinion is not as good
 
I personally prefer the old version. The sportback has had the new one since it came out...I think. Anyhow I testdrove the sportback version before getting my A3 and really preferred the cover in the standard A3.
 
I agree, the older one looks better than the leather one in my sportback, anyone know if its possible to change?
 
This has been gone through before.

I was exactly the same when mine turned up. Had test driven with the old style sliding gate version, and mine turned up with the new style leather gaiter.

Anyway, I spat my dummy at the dealer and they took apart an old style car they had and their new style one and compared the two.

Long story short, it can't be done. Top of the gearbox is different, as are the electronics that go with it.

New style also benefits from gear indicator on the DIS rather tha just 'D'.

Having lived with it for a while, personally I'm very glad that they couldn't change it.
 
ahh well, I guess you rarely look at the gear lever when driving /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
LOL i was pleased that mine had the leather Gator as the olf Plastic ones looked so Dated (Bimmer E30 auto) springs to mind.
Makes the DSG look more Manual with a Leather gator - but hey thats another thread isnt it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif LOL !
 
i must admit that the gear indicator is a good feature, shame they never put on the earlier models
 
Are there any pics of both as I hadn't heard about this?

To be honest I couldn't give a fck which gear is shown, if I want to know that I'll stick it in manual. IMHO the old version with the full metal surround is far superior to the bog standard looking leather stick. The new one is so bland and could be found in any auto. The old one is much more like the TT gearbox.

Most people here are hung up on the inside section from plastic to leather but its the surround that you really see and the new one is frankly dull as.
 
Thanks Eeef. I've only ever seen the TT one before although I did test drive an A3 3.2 DSG ages ago. I must have forgotten. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

FWIW I perfer the TT one to the leather.

I have to say that I like the original shifter arrangement best, though the chuny alloy surround looks nicer (IMHO) - however being able to see the current gear selected in the DIS is neat, especially as the DSG's ratio selection has a tendency to be slightly flawed.....all makes for amusement.

It was always cheap plastic wasn't it??

Real leather is much nicer than pretend alloy in my book.

More importantly, that surround was in 'brushed' alloy, which meant that on non-s-line models with DSG you couldn't have any alloy trim at all because it was 'medial' alloy which clashed with the 'brushed' alloy (which was only available on s-lines)

The new gaiter allowed sport models to specify alloy door trims with DSG for the first time.

If you follow me........?
 
All i can say is that the polished chrome look next to the piano black trim looks the biz compared to the current set up
 
When odering car back in Aug 2003, dealer called up to say not possible to have DSG paddle shifts and a MF wheel.
So we opted for MF wheel since more likely to use it more often.

When car arrived it had MF wheel, plus buttons either side of top steering wheel spokes, to operate the DSG box....Plus the individual gear selected shows up in the DIS as 1,2 3, etc

DSG has the old style chrome gating with plastic shutter cover... Easy to clean and looks less clutered than the leather cloth of the new model which I first saw on a Skoda Octavia in Jan 2004
 
IMO the 'chrome surround' still looks like a 1970s auto Granada my dad used to have.

(except that the granada used to have one of those cool 'T' shaped shift handles)

I just assumed they all looked like my S-line one,as per Eeef's photo.
 
My car was delivered in July 2004 and I think the A3 3-door changed to the 'leather' version with the 2005 model year starting in September 2004. The Sportsback has always had the 'leather' version.
 
Looks a whole lot better with the piano black trim underneath. I hate walnut veneer!
 
Each to his own. I've had enough black interiors to last me a lifetime.
 
i totally agree with you the walnut veneer destroys the sport look while the piano black works a treat
 
Yes but my A3 is not a Sport and is not intended to be. It's an SE and I personally prefer that model. I have ownned all sorts of 'Sports' version of cars in the past, from an Imp Sport, several Golf GTIs, a Golf VR6, several sport version of the Audi 80/90 and 5 A3 1.8T Sports and have throughly enjoyed them all. This version goes as well as my 1.8T Sports and handles just as well.

But now I am getting a little older (58), comfort is more important to both my wife and myself - hence the SE.

I would agree with you that black would be much more appropiate to a 'sport' version but black was not even an option on the SE. It was either Vavona or Walnut and I personally prefer the Walnut with my light grey interior.
 
By the way, thanks very much MikeP for the offer of trying the 200bhp A3. I would be very interested. I will PM you with my telephone number. I currently only work Tuesdays and Thursday so would be free any other day. I know - lucky me!
 
david i'm 57, and your'e never to old to have a sporty car mind you the stiffer suspension plays havoc with my false teeth
 
I agree radwo, it's just that I now find the sport suspension a little too harsh for my liking and the suspension on the SE copes with all I throw at and provides a better ride. I still enjoy the performance of the 2.0TDI espescially with the DSG box and still often go out for a drive just because I enjoy driving.

I'm really looking forward to driving across France and Germany for a holiday in Switzerland and Austria again this year - role on June !
