MTEC Brake Discs finally fitted

So how is the disc held in place like the Audi variant? I realise the wheel has to go on afterwards.

Sorry, haven't a clue about the practicalities. I had mine fitted professionally, on account of I wanted them to work.

Same here, I'm happy taking body panels, engine covers and wheels off, but when it comes to something like brakes I'd rather have someone who claims to know what they're doing mess with them.

Having said that I've heard they're simple creatures and easy to get to grips with (brakes, not mechanics :whistle2:)

I have the knowledge so it's better than giving Audi £300 in labour!

They are held in place by the wheel, you have to balance them on the hub, then quickly put your wheel on. It's a bit of a cowboy job, for the sake of them drilling a locating screw hole. Strange thing is, the rears have one. I was considering drilling one myself, using the old disc as a template.

Discs received with NO retaining screw. NOT too happy about that so I have emailed them!

Bump for this topic as I'm going to order some drilled and grooved discs from MTEC tonight.
I'm going for the S4 345mm discs and pads as I've got the bigger OEM calliper carriers to upgrade the front braking to S4 size. Fingers crossed.

What pads did everyone go for? Was thinking EBC RedStuff, but after reading a post on here saying they destroy the MTEC discs...I've changed my mind. Not due a brake replacement anytime soon, might just get researching though.

I just went with the bundled option, which is Mintex.

Update from me then...

I received the discs and pads next working day (paid £5 delivery) and the service has been faultless. The discs are exactly as expected, and do have the small hole for the securing screw (some discussion elsewhere said they might not, but they definitely do). I went for the black coated ones as I've never tried them before, and the last ones rusted up pretty badly between the faces.

I actually went for the 345mm discs for an S4 (and the supplied mintex pads to match) as I already had the upgraded OEM caliper carriers. As it happens, my calipers were the early type so needed some grinding on the leading and trailing edges, but now everything fits and I look forward to wearing them in this week!

How's everyone getting on with their disc/pads (drilled and grooved in particular)? My brakes are due for a change this week so will be going for MTEC/Mintex combination. Any been getting any funny noises or vibrations? Bit put off by the lack of retaining screws on the 321mm front discs but not the end of the world.

Also not sure which caliper colour to go for!

Mine have been on for a year now - and have covered about 9,000 miles. I'm very happy with them. The stopping power is still better than the OEM kit that was on there before. If I'm braking hard from high speed, there's a bit of a rumble between 40-35mph, but other than that, they're fine.

That doesn't sound too bad, any other noises? Only reason I'm asking is because the one thing I can not stand is brake noise! I must admit, the drilled and grooved look so good!

pretty much all grooved discs will hum like that. does my head in couldnt have it myself.

No; just that short period, and it's not too intrusive anyway.

Thanks Jeff, think I'm gonna bite the bullet and place my order! It was either gonna be dimpled+grooved or drilled+grooved anyway, so I think if the noise comes from them being grooved then I may as well have them drilled too.

Decided to go for black caliper paint with white quattro logos.

I have them grooved and drilled, I had the ones with the black coating that eventually rubs of against corrosion, cant say they stayed completely coated!!

yes they do hum at slowing down from 50 -60 from high speeds...changing mine not too impressed.

Good luck. As for squeals depends on the pads used. When pads are getting low they may squeal abit but nothing excessive!!

just came across this thread, I've just ordered Mtec drilled discs and red stuff pads for my a3 hope they have sorted the screw hole issue for holding the disc and hope the redstuff dont chew threw them will post review at a later date

I don't understand why red stuff pads would chew through a disk. are the MTEC discs made of toffee or something.
I am running Red stuff pads on the front of my car with S4 345mm pagid standard discs and they are fine.
Lots of people run Red Stuff pads and you don't hear of issues with disc wear.
You will be better off with the red stuff pads than standard mintex pads.

I have the drilled discs with Green Stuff pads, they seem to be working fine.
However could do with better calipers, the 3.0tdi is a heavy girl to stop

Pretty sure mtec discs are just mintex discs worked on in thier factory, there's a big debate that all the grooves and dimples/drilled holes means a loss in friction material, and the pro's of drilled and grooved discs is outweighed by the loss of friction material, the use of fast road pads and standard oem discs is supposed to be a better option overall.

My experience using mtec discs grooved and drilled with yellow stuff pads was the discs are quite soft as the yellow stuff pads did eat the discs, the noise of the grooves gets very tiring and a ball ache explaining to people what the noise is, and overall they weren't that amazing, I opted for texar on my A8 this time and will only put decent makes of discs on the car from now on like ebc, texar, brembo, bosch and the likes.

But grooves and holes look sooooo sexy !

You can't beat upsizing plain discs, pure physics that works .

I've no technical expertise at all. It's a long time since I drove a car like I'd rented it. That said, I have a re-mapped 3.0TDi quattro, and I don't drive like my grandmother, if you get my drift. I have drilled and grooved MTEC discs along with Mintex pads, and they just work. I've never felt the need for more powerful brakes.

If you're fitting bigger, more powerful brakes for road use, you're not going to be any safer. You're just going to drive faster and brake later.

Ha ,ha , I love these point of views coming from someone who has never had larger diameter discs than stock .

Moding a car is satisfying as it makes it easier to drive with less input .

Remap - less throttle required.

Uprated suspension - less steering needed.

Bigger brakes - less effort to the brake pedal.

I agree on point one; that's why my engine is remapped
I agree on point two; that's why my suspension is uprated.
I agree in theory on point three, but human nature is such that most people just use up the extra margin of safety that better brakes provide by braking later, rather than braking as before but using less effort.

Also, I didn't say I'd never had larger diameter discs than stock. When I said I'd never felt the need for better brakes, I was talking about this car.

i bought 312 mm drilled and grooved with black protection film for my B7 - after 5k miles start playing around when reduce from 60mph the steering wheel is nightmare ... they change them with new discs and now again after 5k they start again ... now i'm with my Old one and i can say they are still good :D ... i'm not sure if i call them will they refund them and took this rubish away ... my opinion is - just cheap s*it .. BUT use to drive my B5 with the same one (dimpled and grooved) - 35k miles without any problems :) - feeling confused
