. . . and not in a welcome or useful way! I've had the car scanned with VCDS to try and get to the bottom of some problems that nobody can seem to solve. So, expecting (and hoping for) an error code to reveal something insightful I get this:

The first error code is weird, and there's not much on google to explain it, other than some non-English forums in Russian, German, Romanian, Hungarian . . . et. al. Using google translate with some amusing results it appears that the guy who posted it on the German forum appears to be getting told off for deleting his DPF. And then I came across an English post about somebody trying to fix a Golf TDI 170 with the same error code and the response says:
My problems are excessive black smoke, lumpy idle, hesitation at about 2,000 rpm (a slight flat spot), very easy to stall when cold and just turned on but seems okay once it's warmed up (this is a very new problem).
I've only had the car 6 weeks. I'm starting to think it's no wonder people can't find anything wrong with the engine because the problem might be the ECU! Has anybody seen this error code before? Do you think it looks like somebody could have tampered with the ECU/map? Is there a quick and inexpensive way of testing the current map on the car or returning it to standard?
I feel violated, like I need to take the car for a long wash!
All insight is greatly appreciated because I don't know what to do next.

Sounds like someone has used a 'DPF delete' tool like ECUsafe (or similar) on it. If they have done that then they have probably messed around with the fuel and boost maps too. You could try switching the ECU with a known good unmodified one and see what codes it throws?
