New A3 S-Line Turbo Charger Linkage Fault at startup

That sucks... a lot. Was hoping that maybe the parts were trickling in to the country slowly at least. But it seems no one here has maanged to get it fixed yet :(

Audi Tyneside delivered on time, this time!!!!. The car was booked in this morning, it took them just two hours to replace the faulty clip...and yes the ****** rattle has gone. happy days indeed. hope you guys get as lucky as I was with my dealership!

If I could like your post more than once I would!! That's excellent news :) Please keep us updated on whether it's solved the problem in the long term too. I shall give my local dealer a good kick tomorrow and find out what's going on with mine!

Great news costas.sigma, thanks. Mine went in last night but they wanted it for two days as they didn't sound certain it would fix both the 2-3K RPM rattle and the start-up rattle. So got a courtesy car and waiting for a call with an update today or tomorrow.

Now then, I've done some 30 - 35 miles since the clip was replaced. There is no sign of the annoying rattle any more, in fact I think the engine sounds better than ever!!! I am now enjoying driving my A3 with the windows wide open. happy days indeed!!!

Called the dealer in Aberdeen regarding my rattle, provided them with all the references from these threads and they immediately acknowledged the issue and my car is now on the waiting list for the part.....which is of course on back order. Question, the sound clip at the start of this thread, what you would describe as a 2 second "whine" on start up.....is that linked to the "rattle?"...because i have that sound too, but only in the morning...

My service centre were unsure as to whether the two sounds were linked to the same issue, which is why they wanted it for two days to test! Should hopefully get mine back this evening so should be able to tell you whether it has fixed both issues or not.

Would the 1.4 C.O.D. Manual potentially be effected by this rattle problem ?
I haven't seen anyone mention it on a C.O.D., but is basically the same engine and i don't know if this part is effected by the slight diffrence in setup or is totally uneffected by diffrence to Non C.O.D. car.
Excuse my ignorance as probably really obvious to some of you who are far more machanically minded.

I won't get mine till very late in year so hopefully Audi would have rolled out a solution in the factory for everyone well before then,
But if not i need to watch (Listen) out for this problem.

thanks

Perfectly honest question and relevant to the thread. I suspect that the C.O.D would be on the "watch list" for this issue but of course by now the fix should be applied during production....so you should be OK :)

Thanks, will keep an eye on this thread

There have been no reports of turbo charger linkage rattles on the 1.4 CoD engine, and if there was something, someone would have already complained on the busy German A3 8V forum at Audi A3 8V Forum & Community - ab 2012, Typ 8V. In my own experience, it was very easy to hear the rattle in the standard 1.4 A3 8V SB that I test-drove in April (the saleswoman denied any knowledge of the problem when I mentioned it to her after the test drive), but my 1.4 CoD A3 8V SB has been fine so far.

It doesn't appear to be an issue with the COD as I am sure sure there would be forums on it by now, have been holding off placing my order until this issue is resolved, thankfully it seems a cure is very close now, just waiting to see the Saloon at my local dealership this weekend before putting pen to paper, love the look of the Saloon however can't justify the additional £100 a month it will cost to have effectively the same car with a boot!!!

Right just got it back. First thing I noticed is that I still had the whine at start-up so if that is actually an issue then it isn't the same issue and issue fixed with this turbo linkage retainer clip.

In good news the 2-3K RPM rattle is gone. When driving round the industrial estate to begin with I did hear a few other noise which disturbed me. I couldn't decide if it was a noise that I just couldn't hear over the rattle before, or whether this was the rattle still just muffled by the new part. Weirdly it was at much lower speed and revs. I decided it might just be some grit or dirty from the wash they gave it, so will take it out again tomorrow to test.

If anyone has any further information about what the startup whine might be and whether it is an issue that still needs looking at that would be great.

That's good news! I've just listened to that sound clip (don't know why I didn't before!), I also have that noise on start-up, but to me it sounds like a pump priming, or a similar normal noise. Certainly hasn't bothered me hearing it. Just need to hope that my turbo clip turns up by the 9th of August and i'll be happy!

Just had a look under my bonnet to identify the type of turbo to answer STIRLING VOIDS thread, at the same time examined my turbo actuator rod, tapped it and guess what it rattles. As yet I have no noticeable noises when reving the engine or driving, but I think this does indicate that we are all going to get the dreaded rattle at some point.

Startup noise could be to do with the air conditioning - it often is

Yes the turbo is at the back of the engine near the bulkhead, the actuator rod is above the turbo. BEWARE WILL BE VERY HOT !!!!! if you have just been running the engine.

I have the whine also but not the rattle.

The whine only occurs on cold start up and my only concern is that it's an indication of oil starvation somewhere in the engine until the oil gets pumped to wherever the problem is. Otherwise it's not really too intrusive.

It would be interesting to hear if anybody has had a fix for this.

Maybe the whine issue should be a seperate thread if not connected to the rattle??

The noise sounds electronic to me rather than mechanical / oil etc. I might mention it when mine eventually goes in for the turbo clip and see what they say. I had a similar noise on an old volvo which was a vacuum pump priming.

hello troops..

well its the third day since I had the turbo clip replaced, I've done some 75 miles since the repair - and there is no sign of the annoying rattle. with regards to the whine on the start up (although I am not mechanic) just make sure that you have the air conditioning switched off when you start up the engine, you won't hear the whine either!!!

It's probably just the clutch on the compressor engaging

Well folks had my 2nd appointment cancelled today. They still can't get the parts - 2 weeks at least.

Getting sick now like. Booked in for 27/08/2013. 3rd time lucky I hope !.

Been looking at used A5 Cabs !.

That is sad news indeed. This is getting more than a bit ridiculous, finding the solution to the rattle was one thing, but getting parts to dealers is quite another!! The stock system must be very unclear as dealers seem very unsure about when these kits are going to arrive.

Booking cars in only to find parts are unavailable is inconvenient for the customer at the very least.

Yep, not good MJ.

I work shifts and getting the car booked in around them is a bit of a nightmare.

How hard can it be.

I noticed that the journo for What Car is also getting sick now !. 6 weeks for him and no further forward.

Yeah the dealer told me the rattle wasn't going to break anything so I guess that's why it's low on their priority list to get fixed. I've just read the what-car long-term test too, sounds like he's equally as frustrated. He says 6 weeks is 'too long', yet some of us have been waiting 16 weeks!!

there must be a huge manufacturing backlog, or its difficult to make the part ? I wonder what build week that the fix would be applied during assembly....mine was wk 24 i think and clearly missed it :(

I guess that as Audi hasn't yet issued a Recall for the "rattle", that they don't deem it to damaging to the engine? I'm not familiar with Turbo Petrol's so wouldn't even know where to look for the Linkage/Waist-gate under the bonnet :)

My dealer confirmed there's no recall on my 1.4 TFSI but it's booked in with them for next week. I first complained about the rattle back in March, I don't know if they've got the fix in stock but wanted to at least try and get things moving with them.

Yep. With this issue now getting such high profile you would think Audi would get the finger out.

Not exactly vorsprung durch technik as they claim!!

So I am now at approximately week 17 since the fault was diagnosed. I was told there was a 70% chance the part would be at the dealer for last Friday (9th). I just rang to book the car in and was told it's not here, and upon checking the stock system there is now NO DATE AT ALL against the part, therefore they have no idea when it will arrive and it has slipped again.

Words fail me.

I'm not even sure it's worth complaining to Audi UK as
a) They weren't even aware of the problem last time
b) They seem powerless to do anything to help
c) They don't seem to rate it as a high priority....

I hope What Car give them a decent kicking over this......

I'm sure if someone high enough up realised that What Car was giving it negative publicity every week they'd pull their finger out. It can't be that difficult a part to manufacture.
