HI All,

Just picked up our new purchase, a 2003 1.9tdi Avant and immediately took it away on a long weekend break where it performed brilliantly!

We did look at Touran’s first, but decided after driving our Golf 115bhp with a tuning box that the 105bhp engine just wouldn’t cut it, so needing the space the Avant looked the part.

I have a few questions though, but first a bit of spec:

1.9Tdi 130k
Sport Avant
5 speed (wanted 6 but never mind)
Met grey
Black leather
Single Cd radio with 6 disc in the glove box
SATNAV

First off the SATNAV is new to me, it consists of a set of controls on the centre console and the screen is the info screen in between the dials. All works fine (why VAG did you not have postcode inputs on your early SATNAVS!) but the disc is the original one, so could someone advise the model of this and if there’s an updated disc available?

Second although it goes well, its just lacking a bit, and wondered about either a map or another tuning box. I don’t need huge power and certainly don’t want to break the gearbox or stress the turbo, so any recommendations for a suitable map or box please.

Thirdly, I miss the Golf’s armrest and have read its not too hard to retro fit one. Does it have to be a Audi A4 specific one? Or could one from another VAG cousin fit? As we have leather I would love to fit a leather arm rest but A4 ones seem rare and carry a premium too.

Hoping it will be as good to us as our older and battered Golf! Although if it can avoid all the “negative boost” fault codes that would be nice.

I’ll get some pictures up if theres any interest,

Thanks.

Sounds tidy, what did you pay?

1- Not sure on the Sat-Nav have a look in the other forum sections, may be the audio guys might be able to help??

2 - Dont mess with stupid plug in boxes just get it re-mapped, they can cause more problems!

3- I am sure you can get a A4 arm rest from a SE including centre console would fit straight in, be a bit rare mind ! Have you looked at the after market 1's?

Looking forward to the pics !!!

Thanks for the reply and taking the time on the answers.

i paid under 4k for it but not saying how much under ;) but it was about right as we took about a month looking at various estates ad their prices and with the fsh and bills from the previous owner I think we did ok.

Heres the sellers pics for now till I can clean the debris off from the visit to the coast:

Looking at the reminds me. The headlights are slightly misty but it looks like the lens have deteriorated and need cutting and polishing up. they arent as bad as in the picture, and its not condensation either (saw a few like that though)

I'm sure a read about this on plastic lens before but can't find it now, I also think I saw someone say use toothpaste?!

Be careful with your choice of remap as the 5 speed has a smaller, weaker clutch than the the 6 speed but with the same engine specs.

A wet sand and some plastic polish with a machine polisher should bring the headlights back to a reasonable condition.

Genuine armrests can be retro fitted but you will have to cut the console...there's a guide on here somewhere.

Thanks for the advice. I was wondering about the gearbox differences.

I was told (not by by the seller though) that the five speed boxes were more reliable? Seems like a decent remap with a nice steady torque graph would be preferable anyway.

Never heard of the gearboxes being more reliable...maybe it's just down to one less gear so less moving parts???

Your clutch is still smaller (230mm vs 240mm for the 6 speed) and weaker though and it's this that transmits the torque. I went for a DIY Blacksmoke remap which ups the figures to 162 bhp and 290 lb/ft. My 146k old 6 speed clutch started slipping after 6 weeks. My mate did the same and his 6 speed went after 2 days! After much googling I found a few references that said an OE Sachs clutch was good for 280 lb/ft and a Luk good for 300 lb/ft. These figures are for 6 speed clutches and Audi reckoned 230lb/ft out of the factory . Your 5 speed is about 210lb/ft out of the factory.

Basically, don't be surprised if you have to upgrade to a stage one clutch because I'm guessing there's at least a 100k on your current clutch

160bhp would be fine tbh! A friend of mine who works at a garage has started doing remaps and has said they do an Eco map which still gives more oomph but isn't as stressful on the running gear as their power map. Might go see the figures but he has said they can pop it back to standard and give it a try which is nice to know.

i have a car check app which also has tech data on cars and oddly the figures you quoted are exactly what it comes up with when you search the app for the five and six speed versions. I wonder where they get that data from? What's the torque output from factory of a 1.9 130?

I'm trying to connect a parrot kit that plays music via the iPhone to the concert stereo but can't work out what patch lead I will need.

the system has the rear sub and amp anyone done this?

U got the same bhp engine as me pal and I got a 5 speed box and I remapped my ecu with the black smoke remap and it goes nice and mpg good too, can't say my clutch or gearbox have suffered but I did replace my dmf and clutch due to old age and was planning this before the map!

Thanks for the advice.

anyone help out with the parrot kit?

Looks great, I'm after a Sport Saloon at the moment with the same engine!

Can you do me a massive favour and tell me what the rev's are in 5th at 70/75/80 mph?

Thanks!
