Finally got my **** round to buying an mp3 solution for my navi-plus.

I went with the Dension Ice link in the end. I spent so much time deciding on either the phatbox or the dension, only to decide neither were perfect. The fact that the gf can use iTunes won the battle instead.

Fitting the thing was a doddle on reflection, although i wasnt too much looking forward to removing the glovebox, and umm'd and aah'd about removing the airbag disable switch to get more room to work in (i didn't in the end).

one of the hardest parts in the installation was using the radio removal keys... till i realised i had them round the wrong way... then at the end when i refitted the HU, they wouldnt come back out again, meaning i had to remove the HU, remove the keys, then refit the HU again...

After the rest of the car was put together, battery reconnected and ipod filled with music, it worked a treat!!!

here's a list of helpers of needed parts i used:

Proclip Audi A3 00-02 Angled mount (652857) - mounts on the climate control panel for double-din setups
Harness: ice>Link to VAG 20 pin mini ISO - works for RNS-D CD Based NaviPlus setups - Blaupunkt mini-iso wouldn't have worked as it a long block connector, not a 3-part mini-iso.

these are the only two parts that are required to be AUDI specific, and you can buy whatever cradle and PCB you can lay your hands on, as the PCB can be recofigured for any car or headunit.

Good choice - got a very similar setup here, but with the single DIN Concert II HU. I found the same thing with the removal keys - take 'em out before refitting the HU is a handy tip.

...and I didn't break anything when installing mine, which for a cackhanded numpty like me is a first...

Tip for removing the HU keys: Press those brass coloured little dimple switches at the side of the HU to release them. I felt like a right tit after twisting mine out LOL

didnt bother taking any pics since i havent actually mounted the ipod on a bracket yet (due to having a mobile phone car kit also fitted) and just leave it plugged in in the glovebox.

I'm about to install my ipod using the dension icelink plus.

can anyone tell me if the kit should come with the mounting bracket? or if this is a separate buy? I have seen the ones that mount on the heater vents.. I want to install the kit without drilling holes (ideally).

I was thinking of doing the install in the armrest...but then I use the armrest all the time and always fiddle on with picking songs to listen too, so I'd be in and out more than when I was a kid playing in the snow! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif not sure where to put it as with the rise in crimes for satnav, a cradle could easily attract attention. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

any ideas?

no cradle, suggest you get a brodit one .... no holes and very effective.
i was initally conerned about "advertising" an ipod cradle in my car, it can easily be mistaken for a phone cradle, so no worries.

dont forget to earth the dension icelink.

enjoy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I mounted my Dension on the bars adjacent to the gear stick - use a Brodit pro clip. This position keeps it subtle, gives access to the iPod controls (which is better than using the Dension controls) and you can easily slip the iPod out of the cradle when you leave the car.

If you use a vent mount you inevitably block the vent slightly, and in winter are always heating the back of the iPod. I also think the vent mounts are more obtrusive than the low level mounts.

The Dension kit comes with a couple of cradle options. Either for a ipod, or an ipod mini. If you just have a mini, get the mini one, its nice and small, or if you have both a g3/4/5 ipod and a mini, get the ipod dock cradle, it comes with a rubber ipod mini insert to convert the size.

However, the method to fix the cradle to your car ISN'T included, hence the use of the brodit pro-clip. All this does is provide a flat surface in a suitable position that allows you to fix the cradle wothout drilling into your dashboard.

If you want to mount it in your armrest, then just choose the dock cable option (no cradle). this will then allow you to run the cable to your armrest bin, and mount it in there, and use something like velcro to stop it from shaking about.

To be honest, i really dont look at the ipod as much as i thought i would, so it wouldn't bother me if it was totally out of sight, but i know some can't do without it.

good tip from S3_MCD too. Get a single large spade recepticle crimp connector to use for the earth wire. This can then be connected to the earth point on the back of the stereo.

*edit, i dont think theres such a thing as an "ipod **** cradle".....

I wouldn't worry about that. iPod get warm when they're charging anyway.

ah - cheers guys!

well I have the cradle version. another ebay adventure...adventure being the word! It was described as new, but no box or instructions...being a bloke I don't need them right? well normally no, but...I needed to clear the icelink, and set it up for Audi - it was previously set for BMW /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif anyway after a bit of reading, I figured it out, but the dension site really is pants for finding this stuff out.

got is sorted last night, but then got distracted as a very good friend is visiting, so won't get a chance until tomorrow to play with it properly. My thoughts on the cradle aren't as good as I hoped, it's not as snug as I would have thought, it does have the adapter bit, to build it up - but that has a lovely line down the back of it - wtf is that all about? Surely dension MUST have thought that method of plastic production is gonna scratch ipods when pulling them out?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif

So I need to get a brodit clip, or decide where I'm gonne put it, but I would also like a protective cover for the ipod too, so when inserting/removing it does not get hammered.

Still I think it is a piece of kit that will do the job...and prefer it over an FM transmitter/hideous tape adpater anyday!

Cheers all
