Never thought i would ever own an estate but now i am looking for a roofbox. Never dreamed in a million years i would post a thread like this.... How your life changes when you have a small family.........

What roof box/bar combo have you got? what would you recommend? Want something aesthetically pleasing, aerodynamic to save a few mpg, but practical at the same time.

Cheers.

Ive got one going for grabs but we're miles away.its autoplas international and would be cheap.

I have whispbars, which are very sleek looking and a Thule Pacific 700. I like the combination, but it's a longer thinner box than most have. I was limited in storage though, it has to get in my loft...which it just does.

Is that lowered?

Roof boxes are my thing. I may not know how to change a timing belt, but I like a good roof box. :whistle2:

Oh, and yes it's lowered, sorry! 40mm all round, with b5 perches upfront. (it was an SE)

Crazy, what is the max load of the wispbars?

I keep considering selling my Thule wing bars for a set but the load weight worries me.

Sorry the high jack.

This is on a B5, but I'm using Thule aluminium aero bars, fitting kit and Thule roof box. Easy to fit and remove box (you can literally see the fuel gauge drop when the box is on), so I restrict to holidays only!

Does anyone know whether the B5 roof rails are the same as the B6, someone has offered me some bars that fit the B5, and he seems to think they're identical

I think they are very close to being the same.

What feet have they got on the bars?

If its either the 757 foot pack or the 775 feet you'll be fine.

Ended up picking up this Thule Polar 500 and genuine Audi Roofbars after a PM from someone on another forum.

Hi guys,

Im looking in to this now as well - 2 kids and a big labrador!

I'm going to get the Genuine Audi Roof Bars - Part no. 8E9 071 151 FKZ for my A4 Avant 2004 B6...

What roof box will fit this though? Any? I'm very new to this game!

I can get the roof bars cheap at £50 ish....

Any help would be ace!

Rich

It all depends what fittings come with the box itself. I don't have a Thule box, but my Thule bike carriers come with the little square headed bolts which slide into the channel on the bars and allow you to attach the box.

I had a Thule Alpine 100 with my old S3 but swapped it for an Alpine 500 when I got the A4 Avant so I could fit skis in. Now I'm back in an S3 and need to go back to a shorter box.

I've also got a pair of Thule aero bars with clamps for roofbars going spare now..................

I wouldn't necessarily say the audi bars will be best. Oem is nice, but thule bars are great quality too.

Price is another thing though, if you can get the audi bars for cheap then get them, but they won't be any better than thule.

And most boxes will fit most bars. You just need to look at the spec to see minimum and maximum bar position within the box, and check it's within the same range as the bars.

The genuine bars are Thule anyway aren't they. Could get a genuine set for 50quid.

Cheers for that info.

Bought the Audi black set 50quid delivered. Boom....now to find. Box...any suggestions welcome that fit them!

I thought audi would have done a box but it seems they don't!

Buy a thule unit and get a painter to paint Audi on the side.
Done.

Any box really, depends on what size you want.
I run a Thule 700 which is massive but has loads of room and thing enough for me to carry a bike or kayak on the side (I don't have the ability to carry to either but the option is there).

Mine's a Thule Pacific 700, pics at the start of the thread. It was about £260 I seem to recall. Thule boxes do get good reviews.

Hi guys,

what i'm struggling with (and call me thick!) but what boxes fit with the genuine Audi bars?

How would I know that if you see what I mean? I want to pick up a secondhand box on ebay if I can.

I've checked the Thule site and it just shows a million different bar options - i don't want the bars, I want a box that will fit the genuine Audi bars!

I am guessing a THULE Pacific fits by the sound of it - I've found a nice Thule Evolution local but don't know if it will fit!

Any ideas?

Rich

The boxes generally fit to the bars with two fastening methods. First is a big claw that passes from the inside of the box and is tightened from inside the box to clamp around the bars. The second is what they call t-bolts, which slide down the track on the top of the roof bars and have a threaded stud which pushed through the bottom of the box. A big nut and washer are then tightened from inside the box to clamp it down to the bars.

For both methods they utilise a long slit in the bottom of the box which allows front to back movement to match up to the gap you have in your bars. So my room box has 4 slots, two each side. They allow me to choose the front to back positioning of my bars and box.

Some cheaper boxes have a series of pre-drilled holes in the bottom meaning you have only a finite number of front to back positions you can use, but the newer boxes use a long slit which has a rubber grommet to stop rain getting in. So in a nut shell, most boxes will fit your bars.

As a personal preference I use the t-bolts, they're a much smaller footprint inside the box. The thule claws are good, but take up a lot if space within the box.

Does that help? Let me know if you have more questions. :icon_thumright:

EDIT: T-bolts:

Claws: (Notice the rubber grommet allows front to back movement to match up with your bars location without the requirement to move the box.)
