I noticed as I washed mine before it went away it was doing the same thing in the exact same place, more came off whilst jet washing!

Guys mine has been in for this, one paint shop (Audi approved and associated with 3 dealers) says it's covered and another and the people at Audi Uk say it isn't...
Yes it's the rear wheels arch side on the bumper, the paint flakes off far too easy.....

Do they do the whole bumper or just the 'ends'? Why did Audi UK say it isn't covered the car isn't even two months old with 1800 miles on the clock and probably only it's third wash since I bought it?
Halfords and a brush⦠It's virtually impossible to get any paint to withstand road debris being hurled at it at such speed and in such close proximity to a rear tyre (metal or plastic bodied cars): even a rubberised paint will show signs of wear - it's just the same as grit/sand/bead blasting, really. So Halfords and a brush or leave it alone⦠Go for a drive and forget it!

Dont think its normal John, Its come off in flakes not stone chip sized pieces.
It'll be going in for them to assess as soon as it comes back, Ive only got 3500 on the clock so wouldnt expect it to be that bad even with my driving style...... Lets be honest 90% of its job is a daily commute in slow traffic during the week.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but years of painting cars; steel, GRP, and current thermoplastics, the adhesion to a plastic surface, even using aggressive etch primers, is not 100%, and on 'plastic' panels especially, it will result in this sort of 'damage'.
And here's one I did earlier, much earlierâ¦

Mine's the same, looks worse in lighter colours...... White, Suzuka etc.
tbh I'm not really bothered, it's clearly a plastic part and the paint's failing at that point. Wouldn't worry about it to much:icon_thumright:

Cracked windscreen may well be thre tiniest of stones that has hit it. It is one of the highest stress points in the pane where you have described as I have had similar with no visible mark to say it was a stone.

The fact that looks black seems like the primer layer has not adhered to the bumper.
I would have said if they were chips and it had been painted properly there would have been parts where only the top coat had come off only.
Been to look on my missano red (multi layer paint effect with white under red) a6 and the plastic bumper on there after 6 years and 78,000 miles does not look like that and surly audi would still use similar techniques to paint their bumpers.
Give them hell......

Ironically I was installing OPS on an S3 2012 today & also showed the client that his front area identical to the pics, flaked of in front of us, so something is seriously wrong with VAG's painting processes for the last year or so's cars, as I've not seen it to this extent ever, didn't even look like primered or lacquered properly, if at all.

I'll have another close look during daylight to see if I can ID a chip. Otherwise, a warranty claim maybe? Why not, Audi can replace it the same time as they do the brake squeal fix, which is any day now...
Anywho, back to paint. I'll have a closer look at mine to see if there is paint peeling in the specified locations. Not too bothered if it is just over black plastic and not metal.

My mum once had a brand new civic and the windscreen went in the first week of ownership.
Second windscreen was fitted at dealers and broke on fitting.
Turned out there was a small weld blob on the frame and the pressure was cracking the screen.
Agreed, had them fitted since day 1, despite being ridiculed for them on another Audi forum, they work well and protect the paintwork from just this sort of damage.

Inspected mine more closely today and there is no sign of etch primer on the return lip of the rear bumper, only paint, which is why the paint is coming off in flakes (paint does stick to paint).
Within the stone chips (see post #13) on the outer/visible lip of the wheel arch, however, the 'grey-coloured' etch-primer can clearly be seen.
If I care to rectify mine, it'll be with some 600 grade wet and dry (to give the paint something to bond to) and brush paint it in - otherwise I'll leave it alone.
I am more worried where the primer starts as one of mine already seems to have disappeared underneath.............seems a bit poor to prime (hopefully) part of the part but stop short on the ends.
Could it be an Audi/VW primer cost reduction exercise hoping the customer will not notice? It can't be operator error as others are reporting the same, so most likely a production/procedural oversight/error. I can well understand how itâs happened in the production process. Still not right mind, but as with the brake issue, what chance?

I've just been down and pointed out the issue to the dealer, They agreed it should not be flaking like that so are going to sort it along with the stone chips they've added.
