When I bought my first A3 the gap insurance through the dealer was around £350, I thought it seemed a good deal as I had never heard of GAP insurance before then. I did some shopping around and found through Autotrader I could have the same deal but with an extra years coverage for £140 ish.
Within 6 months I had written the car off but got back exactly what I had paid between Tesco insurance and Auto trader GAP insurance.
Best £140 Id ever spent when you think Tesco were offering me nearly 4k less than the value I paid.
as welshwoody has said , I also have autotrader gap insurance on the bike , fortunately I haven't had to use it as of yet , but yes shop around then go back to the dealer , they might match it !
Never go through the dealer unless they can match what you find. I once got return to invoice for £120 and 3 years! Found that using honest john... The dealer quoted £350 for the year!
Be nice to hear what anyone that has claimed after a write off would be? I took it out myself after buying mine and its only a peace of mind unless I need it

If you have any relatives who are civil servants you can join CSMA, used them before as dealer prices are over the top! Think I paid about £130 last time I took it out? Also you get free motor legal cover with membership.
I have GAP on my car (2012 RR Sport) but as yet haven't taken it out on Mrs Beans A3 Cab, that said, I spoke with Aviva and RTI is included for the first year with their insurance, who we are with, so worth checking if you already have some sort of short term cover.
