Hi All,

My cars off into the garage again on Friday having only just had a wheel bearing and other work completed last week... sigh! Its started making a whining noise from the gearbox. Mainly in 5th gear at around 30 the noise is very obvious when driving on a decent road surface and seems directly connected to very slight acceleration.

I've actually managed to source a replacement box having only done 2000 miles for £440 so looking to get it replaced on Friday this week at the same time as changing the clutch... making the most of my 8 hours labor cost =p

Just wondered if anyone had come across anything similar before?

Cheers

Mine does this - I just turn the radio up I'm afraid. I don't have £400+ for repairs.

my gearbox whines alot at lower speeds in first and second. i spoke to a audi guy the other day who is running s3 running gear on his 500bhp mk2 golf. he said his was really bad and he just added some gearbox treatment and i made it alot better and have never had any problems other than the noise.

Mine was a bit of a whiner as well.

The bad news from running so much power in my case was the transfer case was knackered, but the other issue with the S3 box is selector fork and synchro wear, both of which can be fixed.

Sorry - just re-read this - mine's not an S3 - dunno how I missed that, but that prolly makes my original reply even less helpful - apologies.

I get whining on deceleration and overrun.
Happens in 1, 2 or 3, sound disappears if I put it in neutral or depress the clutch.

Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks for the replies! I'm really hoping replacing the box fixes it... just wondering what to do with the old box... I guess it depends what's actually causing it to whine? Might see if I can get it reconditioned and sell it on or worst case scenario I could weigh it in for £20 lol! My friends just had the transfer box replaced... kinda hoping thats not next on the list of stuff to break! Only had the car for 2 weeks and already the repair bill has exceeded a grand! Sigh...

On mine, the noise was partly worn synchros and the rest was the knackered transfer case.

The box can be rebuilt, but Audi don't sell parts for the transfer case.....that weighs in at about £1200.

My gearbox was rebuilt with uprated bearings and seems to be holding up well with more torque than before.

Good luck with yours.

Small update for me on this issue, thankfully mine was tyres.
The noise got worse for me, in all gears now and much louder, decided to rotate front to back (had done this recently) and the noise has thankfully gone.

New tyres are on the cards.

Good news...and not as expensive!

Most definitely. I had it booked in for a gearbox, haldex and rear diff oil change as first port of call, the bill would have come to more than half of the new tyres which were on their way out anyway.

i'll still do the oil/fluid changes as good maintenance in the near future but something I can stop stressing about it.
