I have an amp still from my old car and was gonna buy a sub and wire it up.
is this possible?
as I know there is a standard tiny one in the boot of my car somewhere
 
Yes it can be done, few aftermarket ones on ebay aswell including his.

does it just mean the original sub will play too?
i can't seem to find a separate function for bass on a sub... I don't want the bass coming through the speakers
 
What are you trying to achieve here, remove existing amp/sub & fit something better or just use up your spare parts?
