LED Ambient Light Unit fitted

Did my rear ambient light conversion yesterday,dead straight forward. And quite pleased with the results
Heres what i basically did.
1.remove light unit

2.find centre point of light housing,mark with pencil.then mark out position to drill holes-i went for 40 mm between centres of leds.

3. Drill 2 x 5 mm holes and deburr

4.fit leds and glue in place.

5.once glue had dried.soldered the connections

6. Re fit light unit.

7. Sit back and admire youre handy work!!!

With the rears, where did you run the feed from the front unit? Or is there an ignition live at the rear light already?

Probably, but that would be permanent as the interior lights work without the key in?

I don't know, I'm just curious.
 
The rear map lights switches are illuminated,and only illuminated when your lights are switched on, just took a feed from them.
 
Managed to fit them in yesterday. Went for 6.5mm finishing hole size, de-burred using a small round needle file and then rolled up some Wet+Dry (P2000+P2500) to smooth out/polish up the inside edge. Only have a night shot of them illuminated unfortunately.

Hmmm, quite intrigued by this thread. I retrofitted the front LED module at the weekend and very carefully drilled 5mm holes bang in the centre of the locations in the light cover, only to discover when fully assembled that the LEDs sit several mm offset to the rear and as such, little light actually makes it out onto the dash & console - which rather defeats the purpose of the exercise. I'm planning to buy another cover and re-drill it with the holes biased towards the rear which should help. Can't really see how I could have got this wrong, there doesn't appear to be any scope to fit the module the wrong way round..??
 
I drilled my holes the full size of the circle, I believe this is how they are done from factory.

Just enlarge yours mate, saves buying a new trim.
 
Thanks Danny-boy. I've just had another look at it, fresh eyes and all... Being new to the forum, I'm almost too embarrassed to fess up, but in the interest of shared learnings, it turns out that you can mount the LED module the wrong way round...! Now repositioned and guess what - the holes line up perfectly! What a fud... :blush:

My ambient
lighting unit turned up today from the dealers.....i've had a look at it, directly at the led's and they sit slightly off line with each other, one appears lower than the other....is this right????

Dont want to fit and i've got a dodgy one!! Can anyone confirm that theirs is the same please??

Hi tuffy. It,s ok they are meant to point in slightly different directions, to illuminate your gear stick and your radio area..:icon_thumright:

Anybody know the part number for the Cab version, I had a look at the front unit and the LED lights or blanks for them are not in the centre like the pictures on here, they are at the sides...

Fitted mine yesterday....I drilled 5mm holes to start with then moved to 6mm then finally 7mm. In my opinion the 7mm holes give a far better light in the car...
 
Did my front and rears today, easy enough job but slightly disappointed in the output from them. Pretty sure the ones I had in my golf gave a better affect, the rear ones being particularly poor.
