Good morning folks,

So I think I have had enough of the A3 after just over a month's ownership. Car appears to be a bit of a dog however I hold my hands up I didn't notice a lot of things at the time of viewing. Thinking about seeling it for a big loss, pretty much just want rid of it.

Latest thing I noticed a couple times this week. Sitting at idle in a multi storey car park and I notice whitish/blueish smoke coming from the exhaust, thought it would stop after a minute or two so sat for a while and it didn't appear to stop. After reading some threads on here, it could be anything from the turbo to the head gasket.

Anyone got any last minute advice or ideas before I put it up for sale?

Thanks

Justin

get the turbo reconditioned before sale mate as no one will buy it of you or will offer you silly money.

How much would this cost me? To be honest I think i'm going to have to take a loss either way coz the clutch is on its way out. I've just not fallen in love with it like I thought I would.

I've just had my turbo reconditioned by turbo-technics in Northampton. It cost me £250. They replaced a few parts and it is like brand new. I thought I would have it serviced because I have hit 100k miles and wanted to have this done/inspected. All properly clocked and fitted again. Saved money because I asked a mate in N'hampton to remove it and refit it but pretty sure the labour would not come to more than £100 on something like? If anyone can second that I don't know.

I was thinking of selling at a loss but the car is brand new now. I think I have spent £2,000 on it over 2 years of ownership. Of that probably £1,000 is preventative maintenance and tinkering on my part. It's a good car, good solid engine. So I say if you can save it... try fix it before you make a loss. Rest is up to you.

Ye I agree it's a nice car and the engines are solid. I think the problem is i've not had time to enjoy it before the problems came about. Like you say it probably would be worth fixing and keeping, i'll just have to make the decision.

Recon the turbo mate i had to do mine 2 weeks after buying it . You must be nearly out of bad luck by now i do love mine now

What engine and year is the car out of interest

Ye well so far its the clutch/flywheel, now the turbo, front bumper will need resprayed, the rest is just small niggles. Probably spending 2K on it will get it where I want to be, it's just a thought spending that ha ha

i would stick with it mate wish i went quatro with all this ****** snow hope you get sorted mate and start to enjoy the audi cheers

Once the turbo is fixed you should get a lot of trouble-free miles out of the car considering the clutch/flywheel are new. I say give it a chance!

ok i'll do you a favour and take it off your hand for a tenner

If you had made this offer at the start of the thread I would of probably taken it ha ha i'm leaning more towards just fixing it now!

once its done there can't be much left to go wrong, at this stage you've gotta grasp the nettle and carrie on throwing money at it

Ye that's a fair point, the car was bought to last me a good few years so I suppose once it's done I know it's done.

I've had my fair share of niggles with mine. The guy who did my remap made a fair point... 'You've spent a load of money on the car, which ever car you buy next unless its new will be the same. At least you know what you've done to yours.' An extra 500 quid mate on top of what you've already spent and you've covered all the worries so why not keep it knowing you've done the worst?

Alot of us have bought six year old plus cars that were 30k plus new so you have to expect when things go wrong for it to be expensive I guess. Clutch and turbo is always going to be the worst.. But you should cruise downhill now pardon the pun..

^^^^^

+1 for defo, I've had lots of cars, modded and standard.

If you sell up you could end up buying a bigger problem.
Keep it matey.

If the engine wasn't at normal running temperature, in this cold weather it is probably just condensation, especially if it doesn't use much oil. If it's the turbo, the smoke would be blue as it's burnt oil, white is water vapour and bluey-white is unburnt diesel, especially if it's been ticking over for a while.

Feel your pain. When I bought mine the alarm kept going off. Down to a leaky wiper motor. Then the turbo went a week later. Then the slave cylinder started leaking about 2 months of owning it.
Ended up replacing the turbo, clutch, Flywheel, slave cylinder, master cylinder, wiper motor.
That was 2 and a half years ago and it's been fine since. I had to replace a CV joint last night. The car is on 140k now though.
Good luck and keep going you'll get there I'm sure :)

I agree, keep it and fix it. I can understand the fact that you haven't had the chance to enjoy the car, but you never know, once you fix it you may just find you'll start enjoying it and have a few years of trouble free driving.

Stick with it! Don't give up so soon.

for a quick check to see if its your turbo, pull off the intake pipe to the first intercooler, if loads of oil comes out... send the turbo off! altho there will still be a little bit of oil if the turbo is fine,
