Cheers ppl, it was a blockage in my pressurised coolant system causing my car to spit the coolant out !!
Cost a fortune to find problem but its now cured - am chuffed I don't have to part with my stage 1 a3 sportback 2.0 tdi........

Hi Baza

My Golf GT 2.0 TDI has the same problem, It spits coolant out of the expansion tank overflow pipe. The engine looses enough to put the light on after 1,000-1,500 miles, so only a small amount. There are tell tail signs of coolant around this hose where it connects to the metal pipe that crosses the top of the engine, when i took the rubber hose off it released pressure and spat out some rusty colored water.

I would appreciate it if you could let me know what you found with yours.
