S3 8L Xenon headlights - Why has one turned darker/more yellow than the other?...

Hi everyone,

Quick few questions... I've got an 8L S3 with Xenon headlights and one of them has turned a yellow-ish colour... Pretty much the same colour as a normal halogen bulb. It's only on one side, I've got no other bulbs out or anything like that and the other "good" light is still as blue/white as it always has been.

-Who has had this problem before?

-What causes this?

-How do I fix it?

You need a new bulb mate. When the hid bulbs are nearing the end of their life they turn a strange colour until they finally burn out. Would be worth buying a pair of bulbs because if you replace one, chances are the other one would look 'yellow'. Buy a pair of eBay, the bulb type is d2S and colour is 4300k standard.

Phillips ones are original fitment and last aaaaaggggeeeessssss.

Iv just got this happen to me mate looks like a new HID kit is in order
 
Wow that's cheap. I'm tempted to get those 6000k ones just so I can prove to my self why I want to stick with the OEM 4300k.

Get some Phillips 85122 CM's. those are bad boy ;)
 
got even cheeper ones from flebay were around £6 the pair from china, have been using them every day since november!! just your luck i suposse. that was inc postage!!

Iv got a set of these to fit at the weekend aswell. I believe its a "Bumper off Job" isnt it?
 
woah I got some £3.99 6000k bad boys from Hong Kong lol can't wait to try them out.

er ... To change the bulbs you can try removing the cover on the back of the headlight. It shouldn't take more than two minutes.

Swear i had read on previous threads that the bumper had to be removed to get the headlights out to change the d2's. :think:
Oh well, makes it much easier for me. Will have them in tonight if that's the case.
 
I cant use them bulbs now ben as iv changed from the pre-facelift xenons to the facelift a3 non-xenon's. Im in need of a full hid kit :-(

To remove the facelift headlights you do need to remove the bumper, but the bulbs can be accessed easily by just opening the bonnet.

If you have all the self levelling gubbins, which you should do as you had OEM HIDs, I'd just get an H1 type HID kit and stick it in your non-xenons. (I'm assuming the dipped light is a H1 on the non-xenons)

It will cost you £40-£50 for an HID kit ... and you should be sorted, especially as you already have the mountings for the ballast etc.

I've taken apart and rebuilt several Xenon and non-xenon units and the only difference, that I can perceive, apart from the ballast and the extra cable holes, is the projector's bulb holder/reflector.

Guys, you dont need to remove the bumper to change the bulbs, it can be done from the bonnet...you may need to move the battery back a little to get to the one on that side.

Also make sure you dont touch the bulb if possible and make sure they are secured in properly as they can be a bit fiddly.
 
I have the same issue i changed the bullb no difference i also have changed ballast unit still no better

Is it one or both headlights that aren't working? Checked fuses and/or headlight switch?
