gonna get my windows tinted next week.....
prefferably, id like them all black, as the car is black....

firstly, can anyone tell me what the law is on going black on all windows (obviously except for the windscreen...) what are the fines for having black or at least very dark driver and passanger door windows done and what is the score... do you have to remove it ??
my mates is200 has black windows and he gets pulled quite a bit, but not much has been said about the black glass ???
secondly, what are the legal limits ???

finally, can anyone recommend anywhere that does it in the Runcorn, warrington, widnes liverpool area ???

cheers.

Best to shop around and get a few quotes bud, I got my Passat Estate done good a proper for £200 - bargain!. Esswentially, you can any tint you want from the B pillars and backwards, but eh windscreen obviously has to stay clear, and I think the driver and passenger side windows have to let 70% light through, they usually have a some sort of tint from the factory though. I went for the minivan look, so light smoke for the fronts, and dark smoke for the rest of the car, not been pulled over yet, been sitting comfotably in traffic with Mr Officer right next to me and behind me at some point, so probably depends on how they feel?

One thing to remember is trying to reverse at night is a swine!

Not at all, vision is hardly effected from inside the car, especially with things at close range like reverse parking.

On my previous car, a gloss black A3, I had full limo-tint (the darkest available) all round. In the 8 months of ownership this was never an issue with the local plod, who are not known for thier leniency and compassion around these parts !
Contrary to the above post you should'nt experience a problem reversing at night, (unless your reverse bulb has gone and you're wearing Raybans, that is !)

no problems reversing with 35's

if you have same amount of tint all round rear looks darker than front cos of the rear tint, and front lighter cos of no tint on the front windscreen, also looks less like a van with same tint all round i find,

i got mine done by Liam , or Tinter on audi-planet.net, top one piece back and perfect alround, cost around £200 allround on a6,

Going back to the legality side of things; I've been looking at getting it done for quite some time now; and the most recent information I have is that:

(As Jojo states) anything behind the B-Pillar is fair game; glue MDF to em if you like. Forward of that point the law said (until around the beginning of the year) that the minimum light transmission for film-tinted windows is 70%. That was ammended to say that NOTHING is permitted on any of the forward windows (driver and passenger plus windscreen). Light tint is allowed if the glass itself is physically tinted in the manufacturing stage. If you are stopped and found to be in breach of the regulations you can be served with a rectification order by plod.

That said though, I'm having 30/35% film put on everything except the windscreen when I get around to it; and going off the reports I've had from mates I'm not expecting many problems - not many people I know have actually been pulled for tints, and those vehicles that have had a kerbside inspection by the coppers in connection with other incidents have rarely heard a word said about the film; and I've never heard of one order to remove it being served.

I suppose the risk is slightly greater with limo black than with something like a light smoke (30/35%); because it's that much more pronounced, but I know a couple of guys with limo tint on all the side windows and again, no reports of particular hassle...

Regards,

Rob.

All depends on where you live, who the traffic plod are (if you ever see any?)

For example friend of a friend has a sign writing company. Gets his van donw with 50% tints all around. Traffic plod spot him a queue to Maccy D's drive thru. Get him and all the other vechicles to back up, including him to get him out of the queue and then do him.

Its like anything you could have them for years and then one new plod on duty or a change in force policy and your done.

ok, a bit more first hand experience here.
on my way to work one morning, through heavy traffic, pass a police car. a little later, blue flashing lights in the rear view mirror and i get pulled over.
Pc says i was speeding to nearly 50mph to which in all honestly i probably was as i was late. But he says he wants to check my windows as they seem a little dark on the front.
They are not concerned about anything behind the b pillar.
Anyway he checks my fronts using a special device which shines a ight through the glass and a little reciever picks upi the light getting through. It was supposed to allow at leat 70% but mine were 29.9 and 28.8% !! How low i thought !! These were meant to be light grey tints and when you lookat the car they allow plenty of light through and you can see in and out perfectly.
So i get a fixed penelaty of £30 and get away with the speeding.
He did mention that its all been a shady area before an now they are clamping down on these window tints.

Be careful and make sure you get the right shade

Yep, I got tints all round (well except for the windscreen) I havent been pulled yet but to be honest I didnt know it was illegal, There was an article in the Manchester Evening News some months back where the police were encouaging drivers to have privacy tints done to reduce the risk of car-jackings, so theres my reason for having it done, by advice of Greater Manchester Police.

right...... i think on based on that little lot of information i will say feck it and get dark tints all round. a £30 fine i can handle, also if i have to remove them, its not the end of the world at £200 for the whole job...... so i ll take the chance.... you never know, i may never get pulled for it ???
dont think ill take the mick with it though ....whats a shade lighter than full limo tint.... ?

also, still, any recomendations in the northwest ? im in Runcorn ???

i only know liam is in leicester and his buissness partner near london, bit of a trek to leicester but he did mine in an afternoon do the same for you.

tints afaik go from limo at 5% through 20%, 35%, 50%, if you go for liam he will show you all the tints as you get there and you make sure its right for you.

myzeneye,

Theres a few tinters in Manchester which aint too far from runcorn, mine cost about £150 but then again I got two cars done at once for nothing exchange for my services /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mike.

ok... cheers guys....
im gonna go and see the bloke near me in the morning.... he charges £225 for my Volvo T5S60
.... price may be a little steep, but he's local....
if i dont use him, ill let you know mike, or maybe if you dig out that phone number, i could get an over the phone qote from your guy in manchester....

cheers.....

I got pulled the other week by the police who were working in conjunction with the vehicle inspectorate (VOSA).

My car has privacy glass put in by Audi from manufacture. It turns out the two side windows at the front only let 32% of light in!!

Fair enough, was waiting for fixed penalty however......VOSA then place a PG9 on my car which is basically a prohibition to stop me using or towing this vehicle on a public road!!! Give me 10 days to sort it or risk getting the car seized from me as a dangerous vehicle if seen again after these 10 days without the tints taken off!!

It's VOSA who are plugging the tint issue and not the police, the police are getting used as spotters really and pulling cars on behalf of them.

Oh and as said the two front windows have to let 70% of light in, the windscreen 75% and anything else as dark as you like!!

My advice is stay clear of the windscreen and front side windows as tint firms will sell you them but will not be bothered when you go back to complain they are illegal and its a right chew and a mess to take them off.
