Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

So, I woke up this morning, and it was snowing. ******.

Oh well, trackday on Saturday, I had to crack on regardless, so I got snowed on.

Started by pushing the crush tubes for the wishbone bushes:

I liked this bit, because it was still inside!

Looking outside it didn't look too inviting:

Plenty of salt spread around and some snow shovelling, and we were ready to go

Old vs new:

You can see the difference in the front bushes here:

Then I moved onto the oil cooler.

The original arch liner got smashed up in the crash, and I've been running with it in pieces for a while now.

The new arch liner I stole from our tdi had a small crack in it, which I plastic welded up with a heat gun and a screwdriver.

Not pretty, but seems rigid enough. I added a few zip ties as well to be sure.

I cut the vented section I had made out of my old liner to use as template on the new one:

Slots cut, just needed trimming and tidying up:

Mesh zip tied on to protect the cooler, I trimmed the ends down after the pic obviously.

At this point Tori thinks todays udate is very dull

And it was dull.

Anyway  regardless of dullness, I bolted up the new cooler:

Couldn't work out why it was sitting so outboard. Then I realise I'd bolted it to the wrong tab on the core. D'oh!

I connected the bottom hose, then primed the cooler via the top connection:

I fired the car up and let it all get to temp, and nothing leaks, so happy days :)

Final thing was to bolt up the SuperT's with the 235 vredestiens fitted:

They don't look too massive on the car. I can't test drive it at the moment to check for rubbing though, so fingers crossed!

You have got a massive amount done mate, glad the bobbins/cotton reels have done the trick :)

i take it there is a little movement now in the cooler? always a good thing, now forgive me for a silly question, your bottom arms are they S3 arms? what is the benefit to using them? my Quattro uses normal bottom arms the same as fwd A3s, Golfs and the like, but theses arms look beefier, wondering if its worth me changing mine, as we all know the bottom arm rear bushes are made of soft chocolate :)

they're S3 arms yes Phil.

They're slightly longer, giving more negative camber, and they're a slightly different angle kicking the hub forwards slightly and increasing caster. They also have bigger slots at the ball joint end to allow for camber adjustment.

The S3 hubs are also slightly different, they're longer in the lower section from the hub to the ball joint, making the wishbones flatter and raising the roll centre so that it's at least above the tarmac!

Combine both of those with the S3 steering rack and ARB, and it's worlds apart.

im fairly sure the TQS runs the same arb set up as the S3 ok so the bar is prob smaller, so is it worthwhile just changing the bottom arms for S3 or would it be pointless without changing the hubs, Rack and ARB?

It may well have a strut mounted arb, but I'd bet the hubs won't be s3 type.

If the arb is already strut mounted then you can fit the wishbones and or hubs at any point :) both are worth while.

Prawn...
are you saying the S3 has a better sorted front suspension set up than an A3?

Considerably so Paul!

cast wishbones, roll centre corrected hubs, quicker steering rack. Strut mounted arb (considerably more effective than wishbone mounted on the a3) additional brace on the Subframe.

Ive got all the s3 parts on mine, although most are uprated further from s3 spec :)

And just incase that was fishing and I missed it, obviously when you out these s3 parts onto an a3 they work better ;) hen e why the Lcr is so good :D

The s3 needs all the uprated parts to cope with all that extra weight it's carrying around haha

Anyway it looks good prawn!
Looking forward to the write up next weekend!

It wasnt fishing as such...
was however looking to see how fast the "ye but your car is heavy" crap came out.
I have a spare pair of wishbones in my unit and they are completely different to a mates 4 motion golf.

At least I didn't start it  I love S3's and make no shame of saying it :)

It's a shame VAG ruined the TT (and the S3 in the same change I guess) by changing all the decent parts that made it handle for 'softer' ones, it just means everyone who wants one to handle has to change all the bushes and add a new RARB to get back to where audi started in the first place!

I agree completely...
Sports car companies that make cars aimed at people who can drive rather than hair dressers would have just said " dont drive it badly and it will not kill you"
But as you said... its a case of read what they spoilt and undo it.

I think... maywel be wrong ,
The made the roll bar smaller and changed the bush's to sponge, and made the traction control alot more hair dresser friendly

I'm not sure what size ARB's the original TT's had Sam, I know that the recall included the larger softer front bushes, a smaller rear ARB, an added boot spoiler, and traction control added to the TT's which came without I believe.

From all reports I could find from people who can actually drive they were fantastic, but for the young salon owners and over enthusiastic and under skilled journos they were too edgy and not 'safe' enough so they got slated.

Few pics from Goodwood that I don't think I ever posted.

4 weeks and 4 days exactly after the crash, battered and bruised, and later discovered it was running on 2 bent shocks and contaminated front brakes causing awful feel and a nasty judder.

Hopefully get a few more at Silverstone this weekend :)

Hell, some of those photos of me look as if we have just pulled a bank job and you are the getaway driver.

Cheers Marty.

There is only one vid, taken from a mate who overtook us, which I'm not going to post because I'm feeling grumpy, and nobody has ever overtaken me, so the vid can't exist.

Car was crap, I was even worse (complete wreck tbh - zero confidence), tyres were to the canvas, brakes didn't work, and to make it all better, Dad had just had a spin which had scared the crap out of me.

Oakie had also done several thousand laps of goodwood, compared to about 15 for me on my first time there :( Going on previous vids and laps around the Ring it should have been a dead heat, but on the day, meh.

Needless to say, we got thrashed

No the video I expected!

Take that video down.

Tbh I think.its to be expected.after all you did have a high speed crash before goodwood.

I'm your you'll be lapping everything on track in abingdon!

Intitial acceleration from the chicane you pulled away and then let him pass I'm guessing?

Pal,
i can't even begin to think how scared I would be of venturing out on any track after a Big Bang like you had,
i rolled my vr6 and still 5 years on **** myself going up the same road,
if the brakes are tired and worn down... It's not the best set up, but you needed to get the miles in,
hat off to you buddy

Yea, indicator on and let him pass Jason, wasn't happy with the car at all, later found that the front left coilover leg was badly bent causing massively variable camber making it feel so odd!Goodwood was a bit unnerving for a first trackday back after the off, not much run off as an odd sessioned day meant I only got 4 sessions all day. Was an odd one.

Cheers Paul, terrified is about right! First few laps out I thought I was going 'ok' although didnt feel great, only for dad to then take the same corners almost 20mph faster in places! That gave me a bit of inspiration, snd towards the end of the day it started coming back to me, but the more we pushed on the more we realised the car wasn't as fixed as we first thought. On short road tests it seemed fine, brakes and all, but on track it soon became apparent that the brakes were shot and the handling very vague.
The day after it threw another driveshaft which destroyed that box and prompted the engine build ahead of schedule!

since then the whole engine, box, brakes, and all the suspension are new and further uprated, and in road use at least the car feels better than ever. I can't wait to see how it feels on track this weekend!

fingers crossed the weather doesn't put a stop to it!

We weren't there to prove anything other than a test run after the big crash. We were both a bit nervous because it was unknown and wee prawn was put off by me doing a spot of grass cutting at something like 110mph. The car was not handling very well and the brakes were atrocious, with massive vibration, hence braking some 100 metres plus, before normal on some of the bends.

It was good to test the car, but Goodwood is strange. The organisers are very full of themselves. They have a system which is called a bucket of noise. They are allowed a collective noise limit within a certain time frame and if used up quickly, say within twenty minutes of track time which would normally take thirty minutes to use up, the next session is held up for ten minutes. Hope that makes sense. We don't like sessioned track time, it is so wasteful. Being kept waiting for over an hour for track time is not unusual. I don't think we will be going back there in the near future. Maybe if the format is changed, who knows. Anyway it served a purpose.

Al love the OMP gear :), Nick i would never have had the balls to go out on track again after the 140 slid come hit the barrier at 120, the fact you were there on track is more than most would do, and tbh you had him out the S bend :)
