I've not posted for a while so I thought I would post about myfirst few miles in the car! So far so good. It is really enjoyable to drive with a good seating position. I swapped out my last Audi as I developed abad back! I've still not received the right cable to see artwork from my ipodbut still got a connection which works fine. I absolutely love the car, everything about it. The heated seatsare as fabulous as I expected them to be as are the xenons!
My only gripe is the fuel economy. It is much much worse than I expected. The first few tanks have given me 50mpg whichis shockingly poor considering I had a 61 plate A3 with the same 1.6 TDI engineand this from day 1 gave me an average of 60mpg without trying too hard. I really hope things improve.

I also have a strange problem with the fuel tank. I let it run down as low as I could (25 milesto refuel) and I was only able to get 40 litres into the tank! I don't want to risk running out of fuel butmaybe I should go closer to 0 to put more fuel in?

Sorry to hear you're having MPG problems - I have to concur that my 2.0TDI is providing rather poor economy too. My driving is 90% short urban trips, where I don't really get out of the 30s but, even on some longer journeys, it's stayed stuck in the mid 40s, although I have been cruising at fairly high speeds. I need to do some test runs really at sensible cruising speeds like a fixed 70mph.

It will get better as the engine loosens up but by how much is anyone's guess. I appreciate what you said about your last car providing better mileage from day one though. Here's hoping it gets better.

Regards the tank, it is a bit smaller, 50 litres I believe whereas the 8P was 55, so that explains some of it. I think the most I've got in mine is about 43 or 44 litres, not sure how far I want to push my luck with the range thing though!

I expect , like with previous cars and vans I have had from new you see a 10% increase in performance and mpg at between 2-3000 miles on the clock. All b.s aside I have found that genuinely ! First was 2006 focus tdci brand new, second was a 2008 320d BMW brand new, third was 2009 transit van brand new and latest was 2011 transit van brand new.

True. Cars do improve a little after some mileage under the belt. I've found most of the diesels I've owned improve up to 20k. However, I think VAG in general are way off the mark with fuel consumption figures.

When looking at new cars, I used to deduct 10% off the combined figure as a guide. Now I'd take 10% off the urban figure. That would give about 55mpg for 1.6 TDi and 52mpg for 2.0 TDi. I wonder how close these figures are in real life?

I don't think stop/start and DPF have done anything to improve accuracy.... great for the rolling road CO2 tests, but I haven't seen a difference day to day. My 2.0 TDi 170 A4 has stop-start and was quoted at 55mpg combined. In real life it's around 40mpg, and that's after 45,000 miles. There seem to be loads of threads in the A4 section quoting similar stories.

I used to get 33mpg from my S3 which isn't a million miles off the A4. I have a suspicion that the new 1.4 ACT petrol will run the diesel closer on economy than the figures suggest.

Mind you, none of us buy a car to get rich, so we may as well enjoy it.

Anybody noticed how after a long drive, you turn the engine off and the fan sounds like a jet engine and continues for about 5 minutes?! Anything I should be worried about or is this just very efficient engine cooling?

No, I'm pretty sure that's normal. My last few Audis have all done that.

My car was doing the same. I told the dealer during one of the service and the computer reported no fault, so it's normal.

Hi Suzanne,

Just been reading through your last through posts on this thread.

>I contacted my local Audi Centre yesterday about the red collar cable to display I Pod album artwork- apparently it only works if you have the Technology Pack.

>I've got up to 62mpg this week. That was on a 40 mile trip on an A-Road stuck behind a lorry at 50mph most of the way. Not a happy bunny!

>I 've ran mine (albeight accidently) to 30 miles after there was zero miles left in the tank according to the computer. Car held 47 litres, so was getting pretty close to empty.

>I had the fans running every time I stopped the car for the first few hundred miles. Haven't heard it since though.

Remember being in 6 th gear may cost you MPG. My passat was better in 5th depending on road and weather conditions. I just drove my sons Seat Leon FR 170hp and that was only returning 35MPG at 75/80 mph over 150 miles. My A4 would have returned more over the same distance. Tonight the return journey will be done in 5th gear to see the difference, as the engine was only at 2200 rpm still in the torque range so tonight it will be out of this in 5th hopefully taking the load off the engine by rotating faster

Doug you are absolutely right, 6th gear isn't economic. I've been staying in 5th a bit more often and I think it is helping things.

def' had album art on displayed with my iPhone with with red collar cable , and I don't have tech pack.

. :) :)

I don't think these dealers have the first clue about this car. I am still waiting for the 'red' cable. Such a pain, need to chase them up again.

I run my sons car in 5th gear last night for almost 100 miles at 79MPH the car MPG was 42.8 which was better than 35 on the last journey of 160 miles.
I also toggled on the current mpg and it was constant between 46-52 in 5th gear, when I did the same in 6th gear it would go down to 32-50.
I know this is not good MPG for this car, my A4 would have used half the amount of fuel to do the same journey. My Q5 is about 36MPG on the same journey but that has only 5600 miles on it, the trip is from Aberdeenshire to Glasgow airport 165 miles each way so you can get a good average.
The new A3 arrives home tomorrow so I hope I can get good returns on this

Not good news for people with S-tronic then, as that gearbox tends to go to the highest gear as quickly as possible, when in Drive mode

If you need me to take a pic of mine for them to show you just let me know :)

Thanks for the offer but I think I just need to chase them up! I've given them the code and they've agreed to send it to me...........

Enough for me to want my dealer to supply for free on a £25K vehicle! About £25 I'm led to believe.
