Hi just purchased an Audi A3 on a 2004 plate, 2.0 tdi 140 got it really cheap but the problem is that water is leaking in to cyinder 1 and cylinder 2, there was that much water that the engine had locked up, took the glow plugs out and span it over to get the water out, heard there was problems with some of the early heads going pourus but would this happen after 77,000 miles? also is there problems with the egr cooler leaking? any advice would be great full, work in the motor trade so sort of know my way round these

Might be just head gasket, I'm sure the veterans on here will know of other possibilities.

If the engine locked up then it needs to be stripped down, it may have bent a conrod

Really bad news if it has locked due to liquids in the cylinder

hasnt bent a rod or done damage to pistons and valves, just want to know if it is more likely to be the head away or if its just the egr cooler leaking

At the very least I'd have the head off and get it pressure tested for leaks & cracks

What prefix letter is the head on your car? IIRC it was the early prefix heads that went porous so A B C. do a search on here and it shows you where to find these numbers.

not sure but i would think it will be one of the early ones since its am 04 plate

Cracked/porous head. Does it always get water in cylinders 1&2?

yep ive had this afew times now. head cracked/porus round the inlet ports.
when you get the head off, do check the piston height of 1 and 2 at tdc compared to 3 + 4!

Would I be able to tell if it was the egr cooler from just disconnecting it from the egr valve then running the car?

as above head off get it checked
how would you know it hasnt bent a rod have you had it stripped ?

Identified the head as an early A type so it's coming off. Picked up a cheap C type head so will just get that skimmed. Apart from replacing the cambelt and water pump and head bolts is there anything else I should replace. Also are these 140 tdi's good with a remap? Thinking about doing it once its fixed. Thanks.

Depends on how much your willing to spend or how long you plan to keep it

If it was me I'd reseat the valves and get new tappets
