Hello B7 owners!

Long story short, I currently have an 8P2 A3 PD170 S-Line and i've had nothing but problems with the diesel lump and the car in general so it's time to say bye bye. This is the first and probably last diesel i'll be owning for a while so it's time to turn back to a petrol motor. My choices were a similar car to mine but with the 2.0T lump or an A4. A B8 is out the question (too expensive) and for the trim and spec I want the B7 is an obvious choice.

Now onto what I need help with, from what i've seen there is 3 options on the TFSI engines. The 1.8T, 2.0T with 200hp, and 2.0T with 220hp. Obviously the 1.8T is a diff engine but are the 2.0T options just the same block with diff turbos (K03 or K04?). Which out of the three engines would you say is the most reliable? Any horror stories with quattro models? Common problems? Basically any information you think would be essential to someone buying a B7 2.0T quattro (or even a 1.8T if theres a good enough reason)

Thanks in advance,

Jay

the 200 and 220 are the same
the 18T is a good engine
on both make sure they have reg oil changes
and belts and water pump on time
the pick up can sludge up and water pump fail
PCV valve is crap not a big job to change
coolant temp sensor go quite offen
cant think of anything else at the min.

+1 with Bez....check that the Cam belt's & Water pump has been done or is at least fresh, I have a 200bhp 2.0t FWD job...I have heard the 1.8's are prone to sludging up more than the 2.0's....and the 2.0t's either use no oil or drink it...and there's no hard or fast rule about this either. 2.0T'S like to eat coil packs.....check fsh natch'.....Mine has done 192,000km's and is a 2005. I have changed the dv valve, thermostat and changed the oil and filter every 10k Miles. Oh, and check wheel arches and hatch (Avant) for paint bubbling especially on 2005 - 2007 vintages. Other than that it's perfect! hahaha
Quattros are great fun but thirsty and like fresh tyres often!.....4 at a time! :-(

Good Luck

At what mileage should the pump and belts be done? I know the DV's are problematic on that engine, seen many threads about the revised versions and what not. Can the PCV's be replaced with catch cans or breathers? Does the water into ECU housing affect all B7 platforms or just the cabs?

The Cam belt should be done every 5 years or 150k km'sup here, not sure for the UK but it's an easy search. Its a bumper off job to do this and is I think it can take up to3 hours labour. The belt should be clearly marked on the service history and a visul inspection can be done through a little access area at the top the cam belt cover too.You want to do the water pump and serpentine /alternator belt while you are in there too. The updated DV costs about 65 quid and it's half an hour labour to change at a garage. In terms of water getting in....You mean the plenum chamber issue with rain water not clearing though the drainage holes at the battery? Think this affects all B7's.....well, there is a complete engine housing coverkit you can buy to reduce the chances of this happening....that's what I dd anyway. Here's the link and the parts were about 80 quid all in,Audi A4 Engine Cover Kit Install | Audiction
Bottom line for me....make sure you have lots of history pref' Audi man dealer....if not, walk away....there are plenty of great B7's to choose from....and right now it's a buyer's market.

Good Luck

Hi I have owned a b6 1.8 t a4 and currently own a b7 220 quattro in my opinion the 1.8 is a lot smoother running engine. The 2.0 ltr engines seem to run a lot noisy, very rattly..?seems to be a common trait on these engines..Hope this helps you mate:meeting:

@ bez are the 200 and 220 engines the exact same but just mapped differently then? Not different turbos?

Also avoid a multitronic....get a manual and you'll save yourself a lot of hassle in the long run!

Yes the 200 and 220 are the same engine:cool:

Gents, ive only recently bought mine, its done 83k, can i ask how you can tell if the DV is shot? (mine is surprisingly loud in the car and chatters more like a wastegate?) - car seems to go well and no issues with running etc...

Fair enough makes sense such a shame to have to let it go though! I will be sad to see mine go its been a great car but just have no need for the size any more. But if I can't get what I want for it I will keep it for a while longer.

Don't really know. All I know Is I have been paying for 2 years got 3 left and bet it isn't worth what I owe regardless of mods etc

Thats a beaut marrow but i'm not after an avant. 8k seems pretty cheap for that considering? i've seen cars for way more with higher mileage and looking a lot less special that urs does

Sorry Chris....I didnt see your post in between all those nice car pics! For me, I wouldn't have noticed unless I had read the posts in relation to the faulty dv issue and also I noticed after I bought it, that it felt sluggish for a 2.0t car....so, I took it to my garage and they ran a diagnostic and it read an underboost code ( I think? ) and that gave me the hunch that it could be caused by a faulty dv. Even if it's knackered you can still drive that car almost as normal, don't think you can hear that it's knackered.....Depending on your age of your car....mine is 2005....it's almost certain you will have the old version. It's only about 65 quid for the part and half hour labour or you could do it yourself if your handy and have access to a ramp. Hope this helps you.
Cheers
