Fancy getting into a bit of amateur photography so im in the market for an half decent camera, ideally second hand..

Spoke to scott on here about it very briefly and want to know your thoughts, ideally wifi ...dslr? although i dont know what it means...haha

I always get complemented on great shots from just point and shoot cams so i want to go to the next level...

I like the look of the lumix g ?

Thoughts please,, budget no more than £500 .....and as said would love a second hand one...
 
Imo today’s cameras around £300 / £500 give very good build and picture quality.
I’m a fan of Canon and there are lots to choose from in your budget.

The Lumix looks a good camera.

Wi-Fi just lets you transmit images to a PC or printer wireless.

Have a look in a few Camera shops, see what you like thelook of, but try to get the best bundle deal, the more you buy the more yousave, and ask for something free as well.

If you buy a camera with a lens, buy a clear lens filter..To provide extra protection for the front of the lens. (About £20) cheaper to scratch a filter than a lens.
 
I'm also a fan of Canon.

I've a 60D DSLR with a couple of lenses. It's not wifi but it is wifi compatible with the correct card.

Amazing camera. I'm no photographer but the pictures come out professional.

Its about a year old now and was around the £600 mark with a lens so it should be cheaper now as they have released newer models.

i was gonna mention the Nikon d3100, Nikon d3200 or the Nikon d5100.
have a good look on the reviews on youtube.
 
I have a Canon 350D, I had one for a number of years and I broke it. I found a replacement on eBay for £100. It is a tidy little camera.

When it comes to DSLR, there are a number of factors that make quality pictures. With a compact, the camera does the work for you. With a DSLR, you do the work, and take more pride in the result.

The most important factor is the lens. Good quality lenses can make a huge difference. My personal approach is to spend less on the body only, and more on the lenses. That is why I paid £100 for a replacement camera. So I can get me a new lens:)

I have 4 lenses. I have a portrait lens, a super telefoto, a day to day use wide lens, and a standard lens.

The more you spend on the lens, the better quality picture you get. However, I tend to keep my costs down by buying 2nd hand lenses. There are some splendid camera shops dotted around the country that have a great selection of used lenses.

I also have a tripod, a flash unit, and a tidy camera bag to hold my camera and all the lenses.

This is my portrait lens. Not too expensive, but a superb photo, real clarity.

DSLR = digital single-lens reflex, it means the view finder shows what the lens sees, rather than just showing where it's looking. The light coming into the lens is reflected up by a small mirror, which flips out of the way when you open the shutter. Think of it like aiming a rifle by looking through the barrel, rather than a aligned/calibrated scope on top.
 
Eye fi car works wekk in Jpg/snap mode, doesn't seem to hang the camera up which is nice.
What do you really want out of it?
I have seem new Canon ones for IRO £500 on offer in the likes of Comet, or other retail places.

Being A nikon man i would have to agree with shady ninja. Although i would also add the D5000 and D90 to your potential list. The D90 has been a very popular camera for many years now, pretty much was superseded by the D7000.

I would have bought a D90 a couple of years ago if i had the money. The good thing about the D90 is, is that it has it's own internal motor, so you can use old manual Nikon lenses whereas on the D5000 it lacks this.

As the other people say it is more on your choice of glass(lens) which will enable you to take better pics.

I own 4 lenses. The kit lens 18-55, 55-200mm(used twice in 2 years) and a 35mm f1.8 and my personal fave a 50mm 1.4G. The 50mm has lived on the camera for the lastyear.

Bear in mind owning a DSLR is also an expensive hobby, when you factor in the price of memory cards (you will probably shoot in RAW or NEF= big mb), a decent flash and a tripod, decent bag to carry your kit, you're looking at quite a lot of money.

Decent glass also comes at a premium too.

I originally had the intention of buying a canon 500d or Nikon D5000. I wanted the canon, but i decided against it when i held the 2, i decided that the nikon was built better and more comfortable in my hand, my wife also preferred the feel. So take that into account too. Some people have huge fingers and hands.

Yes you're right. But you get a Nikon case. I wasn't aware argos sold them so cheap.

Hi Guys thanks for all the info and superb photos ..... i have gone for a Canon 600d Canon EOS 600D with 18-55mm IS Lens - Jessops - Digital SLRs

Got a few accessories inc spare battery a battery grip, lens covers, bag, eye fi card, and just bidding on a lens on ebay...35mm - 80mm
Need a flash unit (there ****** dear arnt they!) and i should be good to go....
