ABS fault

I have an ABS fault with the car, 1.8T Quattro sport.

When I have scanned it with VCDS it is coming up with "right rear ABS speed sensor short or no signal" which led me to believe it was that causing my problem.

I have the ABS light and the big red exclamation mark in computer with the 3 beeps on start up (very annoying as you can't see mpg, outdoor temp etc.

I have cleaned and checked reculator ring, and did clean sensor before changing.

Today I changed the sensor for a pattern part, don't like using pattern parts, but since Audi wanted £180 for it, I didn't fancy shelling out

i cleared the fault before fitting, then changed the sensor. Turned ignition back on after and had the same thing. I cleared the fault again and it came straight back as soon as I turned ignition on. Same fault coming up sensor reading short/no signal.

I have checked wire under rear bench, looks all good. Don't think it's module as no fault in relation to that coming up, and apparently has been changed before I bought it.

Many ideas? It's doing my head in!!
 
being that it comes on before the car even moves it cant be the pick up ring on the cv joint. get a multi meter and check the two wires inbetween the sensor and the abs pump/ecu.
do you have vcds? can you check the actual values while driving? does the o/s/r sensor show 0 road speed while moving?
 
I haven't checked voltages yet, I will try to log values on the sensor if I can.

I am thinking it may be a bad module to be honest. Read lots of threads where people have had them changed and the replacement was faulty. Or maybe the garage lied and hasn't changed it at all.
 
Anyone with a 1.8TQS please check what part number is on you're ABS pump.

Mine is: 8E0 614 111

I have bought a replacement one, but the part number has AB on the end, I am now worries this isn't going to work. Please help!!
 
I have one in my Quattro TDi V6 its a 2000 model I havn't checked the s/n let me know if you want it.
 
Check the part number and get back to me.

Hopfully I can swap the one I have bought for a new one with the company I bought it from, if they have the correct one available.

Aragorn - sorry to bother you again mate! Are the abs pumps all the same, its just the modules that are different? Or is the whole unit Quattro specific?
 
have you actually had it code read or checked the signal from the sensor yet?
 
I had the module open yesterday and some of the gold wires inside were broken and the 2 main wires that cause the common fault were loose. I am thinking it has got to be this, plus it's not even the right abs unit for the car as the part number is: 8E0 614 111 not even for a Quattro.
 
I had a(n unsuccessful) go at fixing one here ABS Module repair where I think I had links to the repair guide with pics.

Basically, you need exactly the same unit as you took off, with few exceptions. To complicate things further, the module has a Bosch number too, so when buying, you can search for either number!

As Aragorn said, 8E0 614 111 AB is not for a Quattro. however, 8E0 614 111 E (or A) is for a Quattro with EDL, and without ESP. Your number 8E0 614 111 is a valid number, but I don't know for what car for. There are loads of permutations, I only know the ones for mine.
 
It doesnt look the easiest of things to repair, askong as you have good tools and a bit of experience soldering, which I do, but sadly the tiny gold wires are unrepairable. so its a new module.

Mine has been changed for a non quattro then obviously.

Is there a difference between the A and E modules?

Whats EDL?
 
EDL was Electronic Diff Lock (I think!!) and E superceded A, they moved some valves on the pump to inside it IIRC.
Check your own one for the Bosch number for the module only - a lot of places will use the Bosch number as opposed to the Audi number.

Be prepared to wait a while if you have an 'E' suffix, it took me a good few weeks to get one second hand - I think I got it through a member here in the end, although I can't remember now

Your VCDS scan should give you the correct part number - as I said I'm sure no suffix was also a valid number for one variant, although I don't know what.

If your car worked before, then the number 8E0 614 111 you have is correct, and you need to get the same again.

Bear in mind that you MAY still have the original fault, as it may not have been the module at fault.
 
Thanks for that! I haven't plugged it in yet to see what comes up on vag com in regards to part number.

I was told as its a Quattro it will need the A or E on the end, and tht mine ending in 111 is for a fwd car. I am really confused now what to do.

I haven't got an electro if diff, so don't think A or E will work :(
 
I didn't think I had an EDL as its permanent 4wd. Me being naive again...

All B5 quattros have EDL (with the possible exception of some very early 95/96 cars), to make up for the lack of locking diffs at the axles.

You really need to be using a Quattro pump and module, while a FWD pump might well work, the strategies will be different due to the cars differing weight and the different drivetrain.
 
Well I keep learning more about this car every day!

I was hoping to just change the module untill I learnt that the pump is the wrong one, bit more work such as having to bleed the brakes, but I just want the car spot on now!

I still have a pump in my Quattro sport I'm breaking, PM me if you want
 
Well it's sorted! Thanks to Sulli (Pierce) and his pump.

Fitted today, not too bad of a job, just messy once you take the brakes pipes off the pump, just glad to have a fully working, fault free brake system now.

think I may need a new pump, check my other thread!

some one on here said my symptoms are typical of needing a new pump. There's some on eBay and I'm investigating which model I need. Question is, is it just the pump I replace?

If you have warning lights, and 3 beeps on turning the ignition on then it's probably the module that's gone, not the pump itself.

I had to change the whole unit because someone had changed it for a FWD one and not the correct one off a Quattro.
 
My symptoms are that the front brakes stick on and then I loose pressure in the pedal. Followed by yellow ABS light and 3 beeps every now and then. No red light or exclamation mark?!

Are they easy to swap?
