I know maybe a little early but before we get the real bad weather i was thinking of getting some winter tyres for the S3 but just swapping the tyres onto the rotars, this way hopefully missing the inflated prices once the bad weather is already here. Does anyone have any exerience of them and whats best quality and best price??

Thanks

Meh, they aren't needed. I've been through 2 bad winters with my A3 20T quattro on Continental SportContact 3's with no issues, didn't get stuck once. Just remember to drive to the conditions and brake earlier.

Of course if you live up some pretty big hills your situation will be different.

thats the thing the mrs works right at the top of a very steep bank which she has to do lots of stopping turning le tuirning right etc and although the a4 we had last year was a complete waste of space the 2010 s3 we had was ok but its not just the traction of getting up its more important that she stops on the way down!!

and you should get them. not because you can't move with s3 in bad conditions, but for the safety, your own and the others.
i have them, and drove my s3 last year on a heavy snow and it was going like snowmobile :D
mine are dunlop wintersport 3d. not great on wet as much on the snow.

Nokians fitted to my TT last year, ace tyre. Also have some cheaper Nangkang's which were good, but lacking a little in wet road grip. This year now I've got a quattro A3, so will stick with original fit Goodyear Efficient grips to see how it goes..

Definitely recommend winter tyres to anyone. Better performance in temperatures 7 degrees c or lower. Found the S3 with summer tyres pretty darn good in the snow and able to get around fairly easily with a bit of care.

However I then tried a set of winter tyres (Pirelli Sottozero's) after reading a few reviews etc. The difference is VERY noticable in grip and control. I have a pretty steep road near me (over the North downs) and with the summer tyres I was ok until the steepest point when I braved making my own fresh lane to avoid the rear wheel drive spinners and snakers. I got a bit out of my depth and the car would only go sideways not forward. Had to wait for a gap in the lane being kept open with traffic and reverse back into that to get home.

However, after winter tyres, that's no longer an issue. Next year, with the winter tyres fitted, I just cruised up the same hill with roughly the same amount of snow and grip was never lost in about 3-4 inches of the fresh white stuff. Put plenty of big 4x4 SUV types to shame as they watched in envy. Think they should be law in the winter months as they are in lots of other countries.

Don't get me wrong though, if you drive inappropriately to the conditions they still won't stop you kerbing or rear ending someone. They still slide if you brake hard, but they seriously reduce braking distances in cold/wet/snow.

My highest recommendation for any car in the winter months

Do some research on winter tyres as there are plenty of reviews on the net, but the Pirelli Sottozero and Dunlop Winter 3d and 4d come out well and are reasonably priced. I put the Dunlops on the S3 and the Sottozero's on the TT....both make a noticeable difference in anything below about 5 degrees, and the performance on snow is phenomenal.....you can't beat the laws of physics of course, but they provide a huge safety margin......you do however then need to look out for cars who don't have winter tyres fitted, as they won't stop or turn as quickly as you in an emergency !!!

Thanks for all the advice, with me keeping the rotars do i need the same size of tyre ie 225/40/r18????

think that in that size you can go only 225 or 235, but 225 would be better for a winter tire.

ive had those on my old impreza and they were very very good for the money. I have only used those so I cannot compare to higher priced tyres but not once did i wish I had bought more expensive tyres.

read lots of reviews and people generally say the same...

Nokians. The Norwegians and Swedish swear by them and they cope through much wosre weather than us. TBH honest any are better than normal summer tyres.

I've used Vredstien Wind Tracs xtremes on both the TT and the S3...good price and plenty of traction. Recommendations for those came from some of my work colegues on the continent who run them and they work well.

My tyres always seemed to have stock and delivery were within a week.

I'll be swapping over to mine in a few weeks when the temps start to get a bit lower.

Time to swap back onto mine soon, I had a set of the Dunlop 4D fitted to some TT wheels last year and they far outperform summer tyres, even on an 4WD.

I've been through 4 winters now in both S3s (the 8P and the 8L) and the winter tyres make such a difference it's unreal.

They are not essential, but the fun factor of driving up hills past stranded range rovers is worth it, and they make cornering and braking so much safer.
