S4 Longlife services

Hi,

I had my S4 serviced for the first time in March, at 12k miles by an independent Audi specialist. Now at 19k miles it wants another one, only 7k miles added since the last service

I would have expected it to come in at around another 12k miles from the previous service as my driving style/journey type hasnt changed. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone think of a good reason for this happening?

Only thing I can think of is that the service indicator wasn't reset? Did it actually tell you that it was needing a service when it hit 12k or did you just take it in?

My car is looking like it will be a 17-19k or 2 year service according to the computer so that would fit in with yours...
 
Yes it told me, and was reset after the first service. My driving is local / stop start, not particularly long distance runs so i'm not expecting huge intervals between services, but 7k is very poor!?

Not strange really.

Your local / stop start driving will bring your service forward due to the oil working harder and not getting the heat in to it etc. You should try and do some longer runs.

I would also say its not on a long life service plan either.
 
I opted for the yearly service plan for my S4, cost wise it doesn't make that much difference but means that I'm getting an oil change each year. Personally I'd not have any of my cars on long life servicing (unless you plan to do an oil change yourself every 10k miles or so)

It sounds like the OP has had it since new and the 12k was the first service (please correct me if I'm wrong) so it seems strange that it went from wanting a service at 12k to 7k miles no? Unless your driving habits have changed massively?

My A3 was still indicating a service interval of about 15-17k miles when I was only driving it on 4 mile trips to work for a year, can't imagine it would change so much!

If you're on the service plan and do 10,001 or more miles then you don't get the choice...
 
2 service timers - one for oil, one for inspection service. If you view the service timers in MMI what are they reporting?

Exactly right, so my driving hasnt changed during that time, but the service interval has decreased substantially.

I will check to see what the MMI is reporting tomorrow
Now, who suggested I do some longer runs.... what should I do, keep driving round the block a few times? :racer: lol

Oil from the factory is different to oil put in at the first service. Factory oil aids the running process in hence 12k which will be programmed in to the ECU. Oil in a petrol engine not being taken up to operating temps correctly will make the oil deteriorate quicker and lose its cleaning and lubrication property's, hence 7k service.

Its the same as over working oil. Hence race engines needing oil changes more often. A petrol engine will produce more heat than diesel and with the S4 it has to lubrication more moving parts than your normal TDi.

My Evo has its oil changed every 2-4k depending on what its been used for, track days or road. I test the oil before to make sure it needs it to be done as the oil cost me £65 each time!!!

Would be good to warm the engine before you go out and let it idle a bit when you return.

An S4 TFSi is meant to be driven!!! Sounds like you need a A3 to pop to the shop's on. lol
 
I do 12k a year, so its not the amount of miles thats the problem, its just lots of shorter journeys rather than perhaps one long commute every day

As the car is garaged every day without fail it does get a couple of minutes warm up / down anyway whilst I faff about with the garage door etc.
