Ok, here's the scenario. Buying a used A4 2.0T S Line Quattro next week and selling my A3 *sob* in the next few weeks to come. Sad to sell, but at least I am still in the Audi family ;)

Question is, how should I approach my insurance? I heard that I can only use my NCB on one car.... So with my A3 still unsold, does that mean I have to buy my insurance for my new car with 0 NCB? Does not really make sense to me as I would have 'freed' up my NCB in a few weeks time, but obviously I will need my insurance cover for my A4 almost immediately!!! Should be a common problem.. Any advise welcome!!

Get a traders policy best money I ever spent! Or a fleet policy just as good. If I didn't have one wouldn't get half the cars I've had at 23 years old.

Cheers, Sean

You should transfer your existing policy over to the new car on the date you pick your new purchase up. As for the A3, some insurance companies will insure you overlapping two cars for a week or two to let you sell it, but there's probably a small fee. Other than that, your A3 will have to be uninsured when you buy your A4.

Thanks. Given that the A4 is box standard and my A3 is with a performance insurance, should I be expecting any refunds on premium? If not, can I just declare some 'planned' mods for the A4 e.g stage 1 map so at least I can get some value back from my performance insurance if I do decide to mod it which is highly likely...

So as jojo says, you'd normally just swap the insurance to the new car for the day you collect it.

The issue with the A3 going at a later date would previously have been fairly straightforward - if you don't need to drive it you could've perhaps garaged it without insurance until it goes, but with the new legislation enforcing continuous insurance, you'd technically have to declare it SORN too. Again as jojo suggests - your insurer might be able to give you a month's cover note for a small charge; or failing that you could always try one of the short-term outfits, but the modifications might limit your options there.

As regards a refund on any remaining policy term... That's a good one! If you've found an insurance company which will volunteer money to you, please give me their details! If the A4 will (for the year) be cheaper than the A3, I'd expect it to cost you between £20 and £50 to swap it over - they love an admin fee!

I'd speak to the insurer about declaring mods 'in advance' - I wouldn't like to be the test case for the situation where I've declared mods which haven't actually been done yet, and [<deity of your choice> forbid] need to make a claim, with the car found to be standard. You'd argue that what you've actually presented is a lower risk than that for which you're insured; they'd no doubt argue that you weren't driving what you'd insured. Perhaps the middle ground is to tell them that you're [provisionally] booked-in for the remap and see what noises they make?

All the best,

Rob.

I received a refund from Admiral when I swapped my policy from my XJR to the S3 last year, and i'm sure its not the first time i've seen it.

Personally i'd declare the A3 SORN if you're not going to drive it and keep it somewhere secure until you sell it. Failing that, if you really need to insure it (such as no off road parking etc) then you'll have to bight the bullet and pay for some form of cover for the car but you can get cheaper cover for laid up cars.

Thanks. If I declare the A3 SORN, what happens if people wants a test drive?

If you're selling the A3 privately, you'll need to keep it taxed otherwise you have the problem above - SORN = No Tax, hence if you take a test drive possibility of being stopped by the police...

As others have said, phone insurance co, they will cover both cars for a short period whilst you sell the A3.

Bump bump again on fleet policy! Mine is my company one and only a grand (£1000) for upto ten cars or vehicles and 2 bikes....... No brainer!

Great if you have a company, and a fleet to insure...

Personally, I could insure 2 cars for well under a grand.

Sekenzo, you need to get evidence from anybody coming to test drive your car that they have insurance to do so. It's their responsibility, not yours.

When I did this a few years back, I transferred my main policy to the new car, and insured the old one on the cheapest most basic policy I could find via monthly direct debit. When I sold the car a few weeks later, I cancelled the policy.

I haven't checked it out, but might be worth speaking with a multi car insurer, especially if you have a partners car in the household, so you will still be 'multi car' after you've sold your A3?

Its one of the costs of changing cars before you've sold your old one I'm afraid.

I had an identical situation last year when i got the Audi on the road.

I was driving my brothers E30 at the time, and it was being put up for sale now that i was finished with it.

I swapped the policy onto the new car, and the insurer (admiral) set up a short term policy of 3 weeks on the E30 so it was insured while i arranged to sell it. Cost about £30 for the short term cover.

Just phone your insurer up and see what they can do. In the past i've had companies give me 2 weeks cover on the old car for free to cover the same situation.

As far as I am aware you have to be in the motor trade to have a traders policy. Usually there are some stipulations that state you cant drive it socially etc??

Not sure about fleet policy??

From what i've heard they're really cracking down on them now.

A mate of mine had one for a few years, then one renewal the company started asking a lot of awkward questions, wanting evidence that he was a real trader etc, and in the end refused to renew it.

If all else fails try some temp cover from tempcover.com i had the same issue in feb and the temp cover was only 28 quid for a month on the old car which sat until sold.

Will i have problem with the mods if i were to use the temp cover on my old car? Will i be better off using the temp cover on the new car?

For me to insure my a4 2006 2.0t dtm quattro 220bhp it was £3650 on it's own or a £1000 for my fleet policy and multiple vehicles.

I hope they aren't cracking down on it lol! Otherwise I can kiss goodbye to nice cars.

Yeh on temp cover you can declare mods. Can't remember which website it was but my cousin did it on his a3 1.8tqs before he bought it just to cover him on the drive home with it.

Hope it doesn't set you back too much mate.

Cheers, Sean

My mate got his as he was getting stupid quotes for his Sierra Cosworth. He had the policy for a few years, with the cossie, and various other "performance" cars on it that he had plus his daily driver (BMW 530 then 325).

The insurer basically said his usage indicated he wasnt using it for trade, as the number of cars being added/removed was very low compared to their average customer, and the cars were all high end performance cars. They basically said provide some proof that you are infact a trader, or we wont be renewing the policy.
