help with a white smoking 2001 a4 1.8t ??

hey peeps

im looking at buying an a4 1.8t but theres a problem with it ..

the guy says its pouring out white smoke and that its the oil pump ..

was wondering if anyone knows more or if it could be something else thats failed ?

the engine code is AVJ and its done 100k

any help much appriciated

More likely the turbo, I have never heard of a failing oil pump to cause smoke normally low oil pressure.
 
Turbo or just a worn engine causing oil to push past the rings,so unless its dirt cheap and u can do the things yourself don't bother
 
Having said that over filling with oil would cause it to smoke, seen a few numptys top up using a whole 4 litres
 
White smoke is surely water/steam? blue smoke is oil no?
 
See I thought white smoke would be head gasket ?? And seals on turbo would be blue .. I'm not that clued up on how things work to be honest but have a mate that will fit a new motor for £150. Aparently it's running 260 bhp But I do like a project :)So oil pump wouldnt make it smoke but would make low oil pressure ( warning light on dash ) ??
 
when Dialynx blew turbo seals ( on a TT ) at Castle Coombe a couple of years back it was white smoke with only a very slight hint of blue to it.
260bhp..... must have a Garrett (?) turbo on it to make that sort of power.
By the time the oil light comes on the damage has usually been done : (
 
There's no lights on the dash though that's why I'm confused ..
Its running a k04 hybrid and high flow mani , big injectors , Fmic , full system and custom map

But with no lights on the dash could that mean head gasket or turbo ??
 
Yeah loads of white smoke sounds like coolant normally no? So possible gasket or head, be very wary imho.
 
He could be refering to the oil cooler mounted on the oil pump feed housing. Thats can mix oil n water without the gasket being fubar.
 
Ah this is true, I have a slight issue with white smoke on startup, but thats another story.
 
But that's a diesel engine NOT a petrol. The only white smoke I have ever known coming out of a petrol engine is steam / water.
Diesel on the other hand can be a number of things like faulty or damaged injectors, incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway), low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze), cylinder head failure or gasket.
So you need to make sure it is white smoke and not a blue tinge.

TBH walk away unless you have over filled pockets or a spare engine as you could fix 1 problem only to find another one.

Love the clip BTW, I have seen loads of Vauxhalls do that, the engine just runs off the oil inside of it and destroys itself. If it happens to you press brake firmly and stall the car before you burn your clutch out or / and blow your engine.

Petrols struggle to stay running with large amounts of oil as it lowers the octane of the fuel but they will burn white smoke all the same.
 
agreed, i had a 1.6 16v Vauxhall engine with cracked valve guides, that poured out white smoke.

Smell will give you a good indication, burning oil smells quite different from steam!
 
Agreed I've managed to blow a couple of turbos (escort rs turbo and a legacy turbo) and it's always been clouds of white smoke not blue.
