Just about to order some tints for my headlights, and probably going to get fog ones too. My question is what extras do I need to go for? Will I actually need/use the UV protection spray? Do they come with an applicator thing, or can I just use a straight edge and a sponge?

Also, I'm going for tint on the headlights but does anyone have pictures of tint, gunsmoke or blue fog-lights? I don't want yellow (though it seems most popular) but can't really decide if I want any colour at all, or just the clear covers. Preferably on a black car too.

Thanks
Martin

My Lava Grey with the 6% tint

When I ordered it from the States, it came with an applicator thing and a small spray bottle. I didn't purchase the UV protectant

where does everyone buy their lamin-x from? i like the look of the lava grey car above and may be tempted into purchasing some!

Yeah, definitely going for the 6% tint on the headlights, it's the fogs I'm not sure about. I am just not a fan of yellow, cannot see why so many people go for it (no offence).

I've gotta agree.. I've always been puzzled by the yellow tint thing, just doesn't appeal to me- anyone got an explanation about why yellow?

i think its got something to do with the yellow light being able to pierce through the fog when it actually is foggy... i have HIDs in my fogs and i can tell you although its bright, it doesnt do much for foggy conditions...
i personally dont like the yellow tint but if only there was something i could do to make the fogs yellow only in heavy fog.

thanks for the link, might just get some ordered for mine too... wondering if i should bother with the fog tint at all??

I did get the UV protector spray and do apply a coat once every 3-4 washes.

The pre-cut lamin x from the US comes with an applicator (straight edge) and a little atomiser spray for installation. Fill it with bottled water when ur installing the film, not tap water, apparently the chlorine in tap water can react over time.

I went for tint on the headlights and fogs. Looks stealthy with the black grill on a black car!

One tinted, one not, light tint

hmmm even though that is a hard pic to see i can see the slight tint on the fog... might just get the tint for both headlights and fogs. Xenons should shine through with no issues.

Yup, think I'm going to go for "tint" on both. Think it'll work well on my black car, without dulling the lights.

Cheers guys.

Right I am sold! I will be ordering tint for both headlights and fogs!
Warren how is the light output after fitting the tint? Is it noticeably dimmer?

It is a bit, I always used to get people flashing me on motorways as the self levelling lights must move quite a bit with the stiff suspension (giving the impression to other drivers you must be flashing full beam or trying to dazzle them). Since fitting this it's never happened, and I'd say I have noticed more of a difference in long distance range rather than what's immediately infront of you. probably <10% reduction though, so it's not really affected it badly. Most men say the car looks much meaner, my wife says it looks gash. What more incentive do you need;-)

Yeah I had yellow on mine because I saw a few other A3's with them on (mainly in Europe) but yesterday I switched them to 6% tint to match the headlight tint and I prefer it like this.

How easy is it to fit guys? If I buy a pre-cut kit I'm worried about messing one of them up (I tried to fit tints once.... Fail. lol) and having to fork out for a whole new set

Also, check out these quick photshops I made (they're GIF images - every couple of seconds they toggle from with Lamin X to without)

I think it compliments the black grill better and has a meaner look. But I don't want it too dark which is why I'm going for the 6% tint. What do you guys think? :)

I'm loving what u done with the Pic's "GIF" Great Idea ...

How did u put that together ?

I've still not actually got round to fitting mine yet, but I have a full set of pre-cut "tint" - 6% - headlights and fogs sat at home. Really need to pull my finger out!

I used the animation tool on Photoshop CS4. If you have Photoshop there's loads of tutorials online for making animated GIFs :)

Did you have to have to sets of photos to make this work ?

No mate. If you're familiar with this type of software you'll know it works off different layers. The bottom layer is a picture of my car as standard with regular non-tinted headlamps. Then on top of that I started a new layer, outlined the headlights using the selection tool, then coloured the selected area in black, then reduced the opacity of the layer (i.e made it slightly see through) to give the tint effect. No sure if that makes any sense!?
