So anyone reconsidering going for a VXR now?

I saw the VXR recently talked up in AutoCar and reminded me on Top Gear last night. It handed the Golf GTI it's *** in straight line acceleration and also was several seconds quicker around the Top Gear track. I still say the Golf is a better looking car than either the VXR or the Renault it was up against but for sheer performance?!?

They panned the hell out of it for trying to do too much through the front wheels (put 240 bhp down and do all the steering to boot). The Renault was quicker around the track with at least 20 bhp less under the hood.

I am still sitting here smiling with the part time 4WD and the 200 bhp. Not that I ever go to the track but when I get back into my car it brings a smile to my face. I don't think I'd get that with a Vauxhall. Call me a badge snob /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Its like the old days with the battle between the mk2 golf gti and the astra GTE. The astra being the quickest but the golf with much better handling!

Give me the golf anyday...
 
Topgear is fun but I think the reviews are getting very silly. The M5 review was almost pointless with JC complaining about the satnav. Funny yes, but it went on too long.

The VXR is quick and does look good but I think the Golf is a much nicer car. I used to have an Astra Coupe Turbo (200bhp) and it was fast and fun but the trim and build quility compared to VW or Audi is just a joke.

I recenly looked around a new Astra and wasn't impressed, still a poor interior.
 
I thought the M5 review was marvellous.

First half showing how pointless all the gizmos are.

Then just one simple button push later and the car transforms into a beast.
 
Funny how Autocar raved about the VXR, saying that it outpaced and more importantly out handled the golf and renault in all situations. Yes it mentioned torque steer off the line but said it was not any more than expected with 240ps.

They must have been on funny gas, because even Stig struggled with it last night. It was truely awful and the untidiest lap I have ever seen from the Stig.

ps. Last nights show was one of the better ones, PMSL at the advanced driver bit, and 'splashing out on a koenigseg' ( spelling )
 
I took out a GTI at the weekend for the second time, and have to say... loved it.
My only critism was the amount of understeer, but the engine had a lot of character and the chassis is exceptional. It did take me back to my old hot hatch days.

I have to say, getting back in my 3.2 did depress me, it seemed very numb afterwards.


A3 got a bit of a slating on TG last night! albeit a 1.6, but the only positive thing he said was about the engine!

...what a bitch the passenger was... she needed a good **** slappin' round the mouth
 
torque steer can be fun, makes me want to rag the car more always end up smacking car into walls while sliding car around wth front tyres squealing, but definently prefer permanent 4x4 and light weight rims /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif makes an awesome precise drive

as clarkson said torque steer should be in a straight jacket all over the place

do like monaro and vx220 turbo & non turbo but not vxr,

german quality shines through too.
 
It's still a Vauxhall or an Opel as we call them. I don't care but they just don't hold their street cred or residuals as well as a Golf IMO.

Golf any day.

Vauxhall, Opel, Holden WTF is it with the names?
 
In responce to the subject: NO it's still a Vauxhall!

The thing that pi$$ed me off about the woman in the A3 1.6 FSI Sport (on the taxi bike review bit) was how she didn't seem to realise that if you lift the arm rest up to a suitable position then the handbrake doesn't catch or get in the way of eachother! Dizzy bi-atch! It's not a design fault that needs reviewing.... think about it woman! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/soap.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bravo.gif couldn't agree more, as it's never bothered me either. If you have the armrest right down then it's sloping forward, so is un comfy for your left arm anyway.
 
Just to balance things - todays Auto Express has tested the Golf GTi and the Astra VXR.

In their opinion "- The VXR is quicker, more agressively styled and dynamically harder edged than the Golf. But it cannot match the GTI for all-round ability. The VWs superb interior makes you feel special, the engine is smooth yet punchy and it's as entertaining to drive.

For company car buyers, the Astra's high emissions means it's costly to run, while the ride and refinement count against the VXR compared to the well damped VW. The long and the short of it is that the more adaptable, enjoyable and desirable Golf GTI wins this test and remains our favourite hot hatch"
 
Personally can't stand the new vauxhall range, all to plasticy and what is with the chrome piece on the tailgate. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif
 
All poxhauls are plasticy.

Made me smile at the hot hatches though, i was expecting.. and now we have a V 6 3.2 with 250 BHP and Quattro ! But it didnt happen.

I tried the GTi before i bought the A3, it had terrible turbo lag from tickover /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

the Poxhaul did look fun to drive though ! thats what its all about isnt it ? thats why you are all here ?
we all love to drive and share our feelings. LOL !!
 
Can't say i noticed any turbo lag on the test drives I took in the GTi, the drive is excellent IMO the only 2 negatives I can come up with are slightly sub-standard interior in comparison to the Audi & the price.

Still have one over the VXR every day of the week but maybe I'm just a badge snob.

This latest revival of the hot hatches is great news for all of us car lovers /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Have to agree with Spin, i never noticed any turbo lag either. An amazing little car which could have me tempted... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I noticed loads of lag on my 2 test drives, but had to say... quite liked it!

nothing like a kick up the 4rse at 4000rpm
