So a while back I had a really annoying misfire, around 3000rpm when you came on boost bang car threw you forward and kangarooed until you let off the throttle as you can imagine not the nicest thing in the world and embarrassing/dangerous when preparing an overtake if it decide to happen.

I tried new plugs, coil packs, ICM, played around with VAGCOM, took it too a friends tuning garage to sort the map out nothing still doing it, cleaned injectors car ran smoother but misfire was still there, I then decided to take the car back about 2 weeks ago to my friends garage and over fuel the car slightly a (I had a spur of the moment idea it was the fuel itself) so slight overfueling and no reason to miss other than run a little rich for 10 seconds, misfire occurred, aha, fuel issue, so run the car to the reserve and swapped back to VPower been through 3 tanks and not a single miss and the car pulls smoother now and doesn't feel held back.

Now weird thing is my cousin who has had the same issue on his Corsa VXR and my close friend who uses a Phase 2 Renault 21 Turbo both always used Momentum and swapped to Vpower and didn't miss, I thought this couldn't be a coincidence although when theirs missed it wasn't as harsh but it was still their since then we have done several long journeys to car shows and driven under different conditions to see if we could get them to misfire again but it hasn't, I'm not trying to put anyone off the fuel just thought I'd give a heads up as I've spent a good £250 in random parts, and my cousin unfortunately got rammed by the VX dealers for £700 as the fuel system isn't covered under warranty and is classed as wear and tear, just a heads up.

No not at all, just Tesco was causing an annoying misfire I don't know why but the conclusion was swapping too Vpower has made it go away, I haven't a clue why but my cousins and friends car both experience the same symptoms in which swapping fuels made go away I don't believe either fuel is better than another and I'm not "trolling" to push people to purchase one fuel or another as I got more miles from Momentum and would've stuck with it as I got club card points :) but I just thought I'd give people a heads up if your car runs fine on it then great carry on but if anyone is experiencing any misfires lately then it could be the fuel but I took the time to write it as it was evident to be much more than coincidence for my car, my cousins and my friends to all experience the same issue and changing the fuel worked.

To sum up before being stupid which I'll hold my hands up too and working backwards try the fuel first as putting money down the drain isn't something I and probably anyone else feels comfortable doing.

So far the car has run better the misfire is gone but yeah sorry for the essay :laugh:

My car used to stall in motion if I used certain fuels, Now its only V-power or super unleaded from sainsburys
 
i had issues with tesco momentum when i had my astra vxr, the car made a loud droning noise from under the gearbox,, garage said it may be the fuel filter, have avoided it ever since and as advised started using shell v power and never had anymore issues
 
It think it happens more once your mapped,especially if you were mapped on a hight octane fuel
 
I will only use V Power and if that is not available, then normal unleaded from Shell....I dont really use any other fuel in the car AT ALL.
 
I put tesco's 99RON in my car once, and went for a rolling road shootout. Did it make any more power? Not really. Exhaust sounded louder though. lol
 
i've used all fuels in my car, hasn't made much diffenece in terms of power or economy (around 320-350 to a tank)

the worst i have found is BP fuels. seems to go a bit quicker.

normally use tesco (95) or morrisons
 
V power all the way for smoothness, improved mpg and a gain in performance!

jay im a tanker driver myself.... were do you think the supermakets get there fuel from morrisons,tescos,waitrose,coop,etc ??? as all they do is buy it from the big oil refiners and put there badge on it !!! its the like of bp shell, esso,texaco who have fuel terminals who sell it to supermarkets but the big oil companys add additives into the tanker whilst we as drivers load the trucks... supermarket fuel is straight from the refinery with no additives what so ever.. this is why people fill up there because its a few pence cheaper but dont understand the reason why it eventally goose your engine up in carbon..... hope this helps
 
So mark what your saying is basically "you get what you pay for" is that right?

Pay the price and get the premium, is that the way?

i must say i ride a honda cbr and when i fill that on v power/ultimate etc i notice the results almost instantly.
 
Always use V power in Bora V5.Just refilled at 134.9 only 3p more about the lowest diff I can recall. Is this the same everywhere?Now to fill the A4tdi but they dont display VP prices until you use it!!!
 
yeah basically they will purchase 50,000 gallons a time from the likes of the biggies and thats just std unleaded and diesel which will be the same for virtually everyone apart fron the extra addatives used between each brand obviously supermarkets dont buy or use addative... the addatives are injected in whilst loading if the customers use them... the likes of v power is specially refined at there styanlow depot only and for tesco99 they also have it refined specially at another refinery....if i use supermarket diesel in my a4 then it runs really poo since its been remapped its really noticeable as my tick over seems lumpy and also seems to throw more smoke out at night when the headlights are behind etc you wont notice much difference with mpg if 1 week you fill up at a supermarket and next bp,shell,texaco etc you need to do a 3-4 tanks to feel the difference then if you get used to that run it low and fill up of supermarket to really feel the difference... it feels poo afterwards
 
Vpower uses a petroleum based additive to boost the octane to 99 where as Tesco 99 or "momentum" as its now called uses an alcohol based additive.

At least thats how it used to be when I worked with one of the big name oil companies.

The coolest thing about using the Tesco 99 in the drift car when I had it was that due to it being alcohol based it used to spit some seriously impressive flames out the back end ! LOL When you switched to Vpower it hardly spat any flames :(
 
I've used v power for several years now and could not big it up enough... I tried Tesco Momentum a few times in 2009 but felt there was no change from the polo gti (6n2) so never touched it again... I tried it again.. today in my 2.0T... lord have mercy.. fuel economy galore... power galore... embarassing to v power... i'm going back for more next week... let's see how long it lasts...

i'm no fuel expert... but v power i find gives me a bit more from the engine and is consistent with mpg... with momentum... the initial mpg is lower in the lower gears compared to v power but in gear 5/6 the mpg is greater than with v power... and there seems to be more power.

my test conditions: all tyres factory pressures, econ on, only one person inside (driver) and no junk etc. in the boot... same strip of level road at 50mph. acc was timed to 12 seconds to get to 50 and ambient temp was 18-22 degrees over the test days.

im guessing that supermarket fuel is always in demand and its 'fresher'... its a dumb theory but ive been to my local shell a few times and the v power never seemed that good but the day they have fresh stock/delivery the v power is truly what its supposed to be!

its all good.

I've used momentum for the last 8 months or so after moving opposite a tesco extra. Car runs nicely on it and I get clubcard points, it's a win-win! :)
 
Been running my a3 3.2 on momentum since I got it 6 months ago,and never had any issues(apart from the cost of fuel in general).Plus the clubcard points are a bonus.
 
I was a regular V-Power user in my last two petrol A4s, but since switching to a diesel, I haven't bothered and have just used supermarket fuel.

Has anyone got any real world experience of using V-Power diesel they could share? I might be persuaded back
 
Something similar happened to me with my remapped Dynamik, i used Momentum and when i accelerated hard i received hesitation , i only did 12000 miles when this was occurring so i knew it was very unlikely to be the car causing the problem so i thought about the fuel, started using V Power and the problem was solved, The V Power didn't cure the problem first tank though.
 
My A4 is normally run on Momentum, no issues. Do prefer V-Power but don't have a Shell nearby.

Do find Sainsburys fuel awful causing pinking, hesitation and lethargic performance. Girl at work had same symptoms in a bog standard BMW compact.

its worth a try... i used it in a passat cc diesel and power was on tap as it should be and fuel economy was good... but i tried it in a saab tdi and it made little difference... experiment i say.

I always use Shell diesel Jeff, I found I got a few mpg less with supermarket fuel, but if you get 5p off a litre, it all works out the same! V-power diesel aswell, not much difference in performance, as I hardly cane it, but I got a good 30 miles extra from one tank full(ran out of normal derv) before the fuel light came on, so I do believe it has some benefit, but it's expensive stuff though!

Maybe I'll give it a try on the next fill-up.
 
Mine does feel more responsive but I have to use a few tanks of the posh diesel before I feel any improvements but I do feel quicker response.... And see around 30-40 mpg more and mine does the same driving style every week same place same amount of time.. But 1tank of psh and then back to normal I don't see any difference really... Strange but true...
