thought id start a thread for some reason.
bought this from some really nice people this afternoon.
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
seems a really nice looked after car, loving the colour!
its got full history, 12 stamps in the book! cambelt was changed 3 years ago @67k. its done 88k now.

noticed on the drive home that it needs a n/s/r shocker. doesnt seem to be leaking, but when it hits a bump you can feel the wheel pattering the road. id rather not buy 2 @£30 each........ anyone got a genuine second hand one in decent knick they wana sell?
also it runs cold, needs a thermostat. i'll pick one up next week.

driven it the 45 miles home, while the 1600 can never be called a fast car... it does waft along with a bit of torque in the low revs, also its used hardly any fuel!

might get some pics up soon! im very happy!

We have an avant on a w reg that colour, looks amazing when clean, and stays looking good for a long time too. enjoy.

Good to hear after being messed about in Brum

I have the same car as yourself, I also bought mine on eBay, and must say its been fantastic, I also had problems with the thermostat last winter and fitted a new one. If its not the stat it will be the switch which is only about a tenner.
Mine also had very low mileage which seems to cause a clatter on startup from sticky hydraulic tappets if it's been standing for a few days, which can be cured by a few regular oil and filter changes.
I don't know about yours but I'm quiet happy with mine as there's a lot less to go wrong no coil packs or turbos or twin cams.
But I do stress check for water in the bulkhead as the drains get blocked with leaves. And it will cause you all sorts of problems if left. It is an easy fix, I took the bungs out of mine and binned them that way it won't block again.

i couldnt believe the state that one was in, and him trying to pass it off as a good car! i felt like punching the guy..... the car felt like it had done every mile of the 160k that was on it on it. and with the tyres being worn thru to the chords and brake fluid leaking out of the back caliper. you could tell by the look on his face he knew about all the faults i pointed out!!

i was after a tdi tho. but never mind, this is a bit cheaper on the insurance. so thats a plus!
anyway, a tdi in this colour and condition with 88k on it would have cost me atleast a grand i think, so im happy with the 620 price with this engine.
if the 1.6 head gasket goes or sumurt, i'll find a 20v engine to drop in it!

i'll check the drainage from the plenum chamber tomorrow, i did have a feel at the carpets when i picked it up and they were dry. best to double check tho!

Kingfisher blue is a win win,20v in it sounds good if the other goes south.

Mate went to Plymouth from by Brum to pick up a car and drive it back,it was a wreck he ended up chasing the bloke down the street lol

Looks smart. Loving the colour too!

I hate ebay sometimes for buying cars. Few years back I won a '90 Audi Coupe 20V (Always wanted one!) and the guy described it as almost mint etc but only a week mot left and no tax. He was emigrating blah blah blah. Won the car for £301 and off me and my mate went, 150 miles later turn up and there it is. As soon as he started it up, I turned around and said NO THANKS and walked he came running after me shouting 'You must buy it, you won it on ebay etc etc' 'I'll get my solicitor onto this blah blah'. I just said you described the car as running order, mint condition etc. The engine was rattling big style! Not because the oil hadn't circulated properly or anything, it was a major rattle. Probably bottom end. Plus after 5mins of stood telling the guy no way was i buying it, i also pointed out the plumes of blue smoke coming out of it! He shrugged his shoulders and walked. The guy must of been really desperate for my £300 notes.

But, having said that, I've had some brilliant buys off ebay and loved them.

Hope your car lasts and with only 88k on the clock it should do!

Dan

I must be in 3 figures with the amount of cars I've had over the years, and have had some fantastic buys on eBay. My last was my Audi a4 which is in ex condition, I'm the 3rd owner it had 51,000 on the clock 4 months ticket 3 months tax and 4 new tyres it also had a service a 1000 miles previous , the interior is still like new including drivers seat and completely rust free. All for £281.
it even flew through the following mot without having to spend a penny the garage even told me it was a goodun, and had to be worth a bag of sand, so geniune bargains are out there.
I only bought it as a stop gap that was 1 and a half years ago.

so anyone got a rear shocker and the twin cup holder out of the center consol alongside the handbrake?

Wellcome to the club ! I too bought a kingfisher blue 1.8 TQS avant the other day, went to buy a bonnet and front pannel and i ended up buying th ewhole car. It's missing a few bits and needs a clutch but not much wrong with it !

bought a thermostat today. from gsf as im not paying £21 for a genuine one when theyre £9 from gsf.
ive heard the stories but ive never personally had a problem with non-gen stats before.......

priced up shocks at £25+...... genuine £78!!! dont think sooooooooooooo!

thermostat is fitted and working fine temp now behaves as normal.
its got blue antifreeze in it, looks clean and nice so i collected it and refilled with it. how critical do you think it is that it has the correct g12 in it?

had a good nosey round it on the ramp. apart from confirming the n/s/r shocker is goosed, no surprises really...... needs a n/s outer cv boot and could do with a pair of front brake flexi's.......
lol one job off the list and ive found another 2!

pluses tho,
its had front brakes very recently and the rears are good too apart from a little corrosion on the discs.
tyres, altho the're budgets they all have upwards of 6mm on them.
bushes all look good and cant detect any play in the front arms.

got a lead of someone local breaking a couple of these b5's so might be getting a rear shock (and cup holder!) off him this week....... id rather fit a good s/h genuine shock than have to buy 2 new boge ones.

well ive bought and fitted the cv boot. changed it at home after work.
and ive bought a pair of brake hoses too and ive had a go at fitting them.... but the union is seized on the brake pipe on the o/s also both bleed nipples are also seized and someones mullered one on them with some molegrips, so im not entertaining fitting them while im not a work.

well in the end ive bought a brand new rear shocker. fitted that yesterday. drives fine now, cant feel any bouncing from that wheel while driving anymore. :) it could have done with a pair of shocks, not just one. and new bumpstops/dust covers, but that can wait. just need it in servicable condition so our lass can start driving it can we can sell our rotten disco.

im about to go out and have another go at getting the seized up bleed nipples out of the front calipers.
ive brought my corroded nut getter outer thingys home this time. i also covered them in wd40 yesterday.

wish me luck!

oh i see the post i made (inc. a link to my disco i have on ebay) has disapeered????

more over moderation??

anyway i managed the brake flexis. but the little spring clips that locates ends of the flexi on the car end..... i had to mangle them as the unions are seized on the brake pipe, so i had to turn the flexi off the pipe insted of undoing the union.
going to put a small jubilee clip on them to hold them insted.

Weird, deleted posts usually show up with a deleted tab, but there isnt one.

lol, shall we test it again aragorn? see what happens??
