I've noticed this over the past few months but when doing between 20-30, if I take my foot of the accelerator quickly there is a rubbing/grinding noise that lasts for about a second. There isn't any problem with performance and doesn't come on when accelerating. The more sudden you remove your foot, the worse it is.

Any ideas?

Stab in the dark here Wrath as a noise could be anything I supose, at one of my many visits to Audi the technician told me that the noise I was hearing is the turbo spooling in the opposite direction to its normal direction between gearchanges, it is part of the design apparently. That is for a 2.0tdi 170 tho, not sure what engine your cars got mate.

Cheers Dougie. I've had a look on the internet and there's a few posts about it being the wastegate and a couple of other posts to say Audi techs advise leaving it alone and it isn't a problem. It just sounds awful and wasn't sure if it was a sign of something going wrong. My engines a 140 but can't imagine too much difference with the 170.

Hi Wrath

I have a 2.0tdi 170 which does exactly the same. The noise sounds like brake pads grinding on the discs. When I took it back to Audi the mechanic told me that all a4 diesels make this noise. I think i'm being fobbed off, but can't find anyone who will offer a diagnosis.
Just wondering if you have had anyone tell you what the symtoms might point to?
Let me know if you do.
Thanks

Just had June at a German specialist garage and they said they cudnt hear anything wrong and no codes but te noise I hear sounds rough! And sometimes flutters in low gears

Still running and the noise still there. No lights on dash and everything else seems fine.
