Well not another A4 suspension arm post I hear you all groan....lol.
Thing is, I have a knock coming from the front end and I don't think that its an arm or joint problem?
I appreciate that these sort of issues are notoriously difficult to diagnose via the internet but these are my symptoms....
When pulling away from rest outside my house and travelling the short distance down my drive (smooth concrete with a few 'ripples') there's a distinct metallic knock from the front end.
It isn't generally there if I hit a pothole etc, rough surfaces seem to induce it more than anything else.
If I come to a halt and deliberately don't de-clutch , and leave it it in too high a gear I can seemingly get it to appear on demand ; there's a distinct knock-knock-knock from the front end that doesn't sound too healthy at all.
Have checked all arms/joints at front with prybar and cannot find any movement, in fact I took the car back to the garage last week where I get the MOT done (so up on 4 poster and checked all joints for play) and they couldn't find anything wrong at all....
Same with ARB mounts and the C shaped drop links.
Having run 2 x Audi 80's I'm familiar with strut-top mountings and the noise they make when they go but the A4 doesn't have an equivalent set-up does it?
Can anyone suggest possible causes?
Engine mounts seem OK as I did an engine oil change yesterday and they appeared intact.
Front shocks and springs seem fine with no evidence of breakage or leaks.
Checked the bolts that hold the upper suspension arm cradle/carrier to the inner wing and they are all very tight, driveshaft joints appear OK, no knocking on turning or anything , in fact drivers outer is only 1 yr old.
It's got me stumped?
Could a gearbox mount be on its way out?
Would be grateful for any pointers!

I have the same problem the only movement i had was the c-links so replaced them but sound stil therel ?....So any help from anyone would be a great help to us both :)

Hi, I had a very similar issue, changed the c-links etc, tried checking for play in the arms, even went through 2 MOT's with nothing identified. In the end I asked at my local Audi dealers and after a short drive they pointed to the lower bent arm. Changed this and it fixed the problem. Couldn't really identify any play in it when it was on the car under tension but as soon as it was off the car it was pretty obvious it was well worn.

try dragging the brakes and see if it goes away.

I had a metallic rattle on the Avant when driving over rough ground, pretty much exactly as described, corrugations in the road would cause it but potholes wouldnt.

After looking over the whole front suspension and not finding anything, i noticed one day that it went away when i braked. My first thaught was a loose caliper, but they were done up tight. Then i notced the little wire spring was missing from the drivers front.

fitted a new spring and the noise went away :)

Ive got the same problem! when i brake the rattle dissapears ! even when very slight braking and its away! whats the spring your talking about ? is it on the caliper holding the pads ?

Thanks all, yes the spring is there, and yes its also there under braking......
I think it may well be one of those faults that even though you are sure isn't an arm etc may well turn out to be so!
The big curved suspension arm (lower rear one) is a pattern part from GSF on one side of the car that I've never been that happy with anyway (because it was cheap and no doubt made in China!) , I think I might get that off and have a good look at it.....

Intresting will have a look into that where do i get them if im missing one ? :)

I got the last one from the main stealer as they can be bent out of shape over time as you remove and refit them etc etc , it wasn't expensive IIRC.

having made that suggestion I have the same fecking thing!

went to change a loose arm only to find that the one I thought was worm was not. the worn one is on the other side.
Noise transfer I here you say.
Nope
changed and I have clunking and knocking going over bumps that I can not find anything loose.
tried everything, I cant get anything to move in it's joints

have checked:
spring top mounts, all ball joints and bushes on all four arms, wheel bearings, brake caliper bolts, pad springs, ARB C links, ARB's ( the only thing I can see is possibly slight wear in the ARB bush but I cant get the ARB to move in the bush even without load on the front wheels!)

did you solve yours!?

Its finally fixed!!!!!!
The clonking and knocking had got progressively worse so I decided to call it a day and actually book it into my local German car specialist for them to do a bit of investigation..
Didn't take them too long to diagnose the offside lower rear suspension arm (the big curved one) had play in the balljoint.
They fitted a new Genuine arm from TPS and now I've a clonk-free A4 again.
Was convinced all my arms had been OK, well I was completely wrong, lol.
For those of you wth similar issues, it might pay you to re-check your arms too?????

Glad you have got it fixed, I did point this out at the start though!
