I'm planning a road trip to Central Europe on my vacation in July, and as part of the trip I thought I'd spend a day or two at the Alps. Oh, and I *will* drop by the Ring for sure too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyways, back to the subject. Any of you guys who have been there, do you have any suggestions as to places I might want to visit and/or nice mountain roads to choose over the "boring" highways? It's quite difficult to choose a nice route just by looking at the map..

Thanks for any suggestions! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

RomantischeStrasse, very pretty, goes past (or near) the castles built by that Bavarian King Ludwig... interesting character. Don't ask me directions (lost little South African that i was), I was driven around by my German friend.... :)))

A pretty and fun drive would be to take the Julier Pass from Thusis up into the Engadine Valley in South-eastern Switzerland. The Julier is very twisty and the Engadine is very pretty. From there you pass through the famous resort of St Moritz and take the road through Pontresina up the Bernina Pass. In summer from the Bernina you can take a tiny road up towards Livigno and then take a road called the Foscagno Pass down to Bormio in Italy. From Bormio you can get on the famous Stelvio pass. All great driving territory.

Once you're in the alps its hard to go wrong.
Get to the ring via liege (avoid brussels) and head south into germany. Get on the autobahn through Mannheim and Freiburg. You can then either head straight south towards lucerne via the st gottard (misspelt?) pass, which is truly awesome, or get to Turin and follow the legendary Tende pass to Menton / Monaco. Then you have Nice, Cannes, St tropez etc until you head north and home.

Will attach a pic...

Not at all. Unfortunately I had to pull the vids due to lack of space! If anyone is willing to host them then I'll upload them.

Moogie - Central Europe's quite large. What do you want to cover? Audi factories, champagne country, black forest, Italian coast, etc etc We've done a few two week driving holidays but of course what suits us may not suit you. Give us some clues and we'll try and help out.

Stelvio Pass is a must though!!

Jungle's suggestion is also a fine one. The roads above Monaco around La Turbie are great for pretending you're a character in Ronin...where's Natasha McElhone (spelling?) when you need her!

The roads in that area are very cool. We ran up the Col De Turini after a night in Monaco.

The view from my room wasn't bad plus we'd just come from the San Marino GP so the Monanco one was just be set up. I had to do a couple of laps!

To be honest I can't remember. I'll see if I've got all my route notes etc (there was a group of us so we had to be organised!!). It was quite a small place and not a major chain.
