Was wondering if i could get some help regarding my car,

today my car had ran out of diesel on the way home so i pulled over to the side of the road and took a jerry can up to the nearest petrol station, filled the car back up with some diesel and waited for about 20 minutes. I continued to try to start my car but it just wouldnt start, i tried this for about 5 mins, after that tried bump starting it down a hill and it still wouldnt start, im wondering if there is anything that im not doing properly, or something that needs to be done to the car since it ran out of diesel. also its not the battery, because it says its a 12 volts,

any help is welcome

cheers

Might need more than a gallon of fuel to get it to prime properly.

Worth doing a vagcom scan to see if there are any faults in the ECU.

When you say it's not the battery as it shows 12v, it that cranking 12v or idle 12v, if idle you will probably find when cranking it drops right down. TBH when my customers run out of diesel I normally remove filter (change if possible) and fill it up with diesel. You will need to crank it over for along time as the diesel has to be pulled from the tank, through the lines, cooler, filter, pump so get some jump leads on her but make your life easier and change the filter, you will have drew all the crap from the tank the filter or if this isn't possible then fill the filter up.
Just a quick note = You should try and never run out of diesel as with this fuel being a oil based it lub's the pump etc and when diesel engines run empty the moving parts run dry, I have seen pumps fail and injectors + seals because of this so please be careful lol.

Thanks for this Andy, ran out of fuel twice in one day!!!! normally always try keep both my cars at least a half but im sharing them with a guy whos over on trial with kilmarnock fc......wasnt me driving, seemingly the first time it ran out £5 of diesel was enough to re-start it, car started shuddering before the 2nd run out???

just hoping its nothing to serious as its been one thing after another, absolutely raging with this. never ran out of fuel in my driving life and this happens twice in one ****ing day!!!!

Yeh good point, and sort of what i was getting at with my "add more fuel", these cars have no in tank lift pump, so the injector pump on the engine has to draw fuel all the way from the tank, fill the filter etc.

More fuel in the tank means less of a head for the IP to pull it up. Filling the filter up is a good shout though.

TBH £5 is nothing, and certainly not enough to properly prime the fuel system if its empty.

Stick a couple gallons of fuel in there and see how it goes. As andy says though, you might want a new filter.

And tell your buddy that when the big yellow light comes on that means go put ****** fuel in.

After it run out the first time, and he got it running again, WTF didnt he go fill the ****** thing up.

our lass has run our landrover out a couple of times.
but as it has a manual lever on the side of the cam driven lift pump..... its no problem.
just put the fuel in and work the little lever for a couple of minutes to pump the fuel round before attempting to start it.

if your going to run out again.... plumb one of these into the fuel line under the bonnet.

why on earth all diesels without an electric pump in the tank dont have one of these simple hand primers is beyond me!

Guys thanks for all your help, the lad ended up getting someone out, not exactly sure of what was wrong yet but the car finally started and hopefully will be ok. £25 call out fee so ended up not to bad in the end.......but as you say, why even wait til the fuel light comes on!!!!! Especially in someone else's motor!!!
