Stopped off to fill up with fuel yesterday and spotted the ideal private plate for my car. Bearing in mind that the vehicle that it was on was 4x4 Merc. I asked the old gentleman how much for the plate in the off chance it was gonna be cheap.........he just laughed and then saw why I was interested after viewing my car.

The plate in question was........... ' S3 '

I cringe to think how much it would cost bearing in mind that a colleague paid a 6 figure sum for..... ' X1 '.

A3 is on an Audi A3.

S3 deffo should be on an S3, not a Merc!! (MID database says it's on a Freelander though)

SIX FIGURE SUM!?!?!?!??!?!?!!11one!!11!eleven

For a number plate?

Please tell me that included a decimal point after the first 4 figures?

*shellshocked*

The only problem is you would have to own an S3 for the rest of your life lol

Slightly off topic, I saw an RS6 Avant advert the other day and its reg was YE51CAN spaced to say YE5 1 CAN !! How cool is that for a standard plate?!

Don't see the point of private plates myself. Collosal waste of money and a nice scam perpetuated by the DVLA

I have a private plate, and you are correct they are a waste of money but I've had mine that long i just transfer it on to new cars as it's been with me a while.

I wouldn't buy now though, i have spent more in transfer fees since i have had than what the actual plate costed.

I got mine as a 21st pressie from my late grandparents. They'd left money with my parents and seeing as both grandfathers were very keen on cars (1 being the MD of a dealership in Cirencester) it seemed quite fitting to have a plate rather than a watch, as it will appear on each car I have. It relates to the month, year & my initials.

I think if they have some meaning then great, but the ones that are blatantly just random to hide the age of the vehicle are a bit rubbish.

Nope.........he paid well over 100k for X1 and was put on a 3dr Audi A3 the last time I saw him at last years Golf Open. He's got his own golfing company so can more than afford it. Complete waste IMHO but its his decision in the end.
