i had to help a jag up my rd to day and he had all wheel drive confused the hell out of me lol although both back wheels where spining not sure if you can turn it off
depends on the differential... even for Audi's: a Torsen quattro is designed to work where some of your tyres are giving you some grip....

I definitely agree that winter tyres in these conditions are beneficial.
However, to potentially open a can of worms, isnt quattro only good for setting off and driving in a straight line in this weather? When it comes to braking, 4wd is not going to slow you down any quicker than 2wd, and when you corner, you are subject to exactly the same centrifugal force as a 2wd car and likely to slide off the road.
Ive seen quattro videos on youtube, ive even seen a video of a subaru wrx impreza towing an artic lorry out of a snow drift. However, all of the videos demonstrating 4wd ability in the snow only show them going in a straight line or up hills...

Mate phoned me this morning asking for help . He had to leave his 330 coupe Beemer in a side street ! My 3.0 Q pulled it out of trouble no problem ! Be it in a straight line tho !
In a 4 wheel drive the engine will brake all 4 wheels at the same time so you will stop quicker as a FWD, also with winter tyres you will corner better and stop better as all 4 wheels are driven at the same time.

i had to giggle today at my neighbour who's front wheels was just spinning and no forward motion was happening, i had to lean on his car to get him out of our court yard, he then went and got stuck in the lane and abandoned ship there and gave up, i then stopped and offered him a lift in the Audi Quattro with a big grin on my face as he's face was like, WTF how comes your car just drives ok in this snow?

Same here - spent a fortune on Continental WinterContacts, but no snow (yet) in my part of Lancashire. So, praying for some!!
Been away for the weekend in Stratford-upon-Avon for a company dinner - took the Quattro.
Bosses Jag XF had to be towed up the hill to the hotel, all the other company 3-series BMW's had to be pushed.
Left em to it and had several pints and a chuckle.
Saw a BMW X5 hit a snow plough on the rear n/s corner on the M40 - front nearside wing / A-pillar of X5 totalled (windscreen totally trashed) - he was the only idiot in the outside lane apart from the Snow Ploughs!!!!!
For me a little embarrassing - got back home - Quattro back to bed in the garage, moved my company BMW 320d Tourer across the road while I cleared the drive and then spent the next hour trying to get the damn thing turned around and back on the clear drive - resorted to more snow shovelling in the road. Even our FWD S-Max handles better on the snow.

i only have 2 wheel drive and iv never got stuck with my audi i think its mostly about your driving styli tbh and i maybe wrong for asking this but can some explain to me how a 4wd stops faster as thats a new one to me

Honestly for me so much is driving style, ok yes rwd and front engines dont work.. but the amount of videos I saw on the news of people pushing jags and the owner just revving the **** out of it wheels spinning everywhere was just plain ridiculous, so many people just have no idea how to drive or control themselves in ice/snow!

Yes engine braking in a 4wd car is going to be more effective than a 2wd car. But when is the last time you avoided an obstacle, stopped at traffic lights or slowed for traffic by coasting up to it? The second you apply the brakes, you are in the same position as everyone else.
Im also still a little unsure how a quattro on icy bends with winter tyres manages better then a 2wd with winter tyres on the same road.
Please dont see this is a quattro bashing post, I would own an RS4 in a heartbeat. If I could afford it. But I cant, which is why I have a 2wd A3, which achieves slightly better mpg and lower running costs than a quattro, and for 99.9% of the time in this countries climate and weather is perfectly driveable...

I drove back in the snow from Dover at midnight on Satuday/sunday morning coming back from Disney, saw lots of wheel spining beemers, when I got off the motorway at Junction 7 of the M25, there was a car in the distance reversing back down the slip road, I did wonder why, but when I got closer I noticed it was a Merc SL! I did chuckle when my fwd Audi just drove straight past him up the hill

My missus is 34 weeks pregnant and had a proper rough time throughout her pregnancy. Hyperemesis, SPD and pre eclampsia!
Yesterday was her baby shower and after inviting 40 people only 5 confirmed because of snow! Like hell was I letting her miss out! I drove 100 miles around our town ALL day ferrying people to make sure they arrived! All this in 6/7 inches of deep snow! Had to dig myself out of my driveway but once out I was gone!
Only a FWD 1.9 TDI but boy was it good! **** tyres too

Last year when it snowed there a hill near Orpington very slight but a hill all the same, well the amount of BMW's fishtailing trying to get up the hill was hilariousness then I drove past them on the other side of the road.
