Those f****** b****** DV hose clips... Help!

Right. So, I'm looking to test my DV, OK? I have a sneaking suspicion that the hesitation I'm getting when the car's under load is a leak developing in the diaphragm, and I want to correct this ASAP. The dealer found no DTCs, and "road tested" it for 2 miles in Beckenham before pronouncing himself unable to find a problem... So I'm taking things into me own hands here. Volkspares can supply me with a new, "N" revision part within 24 hours if needs be, so if I find a problem I can replace the DV.

Took the engine cover off, there's the DV (which appears to be an "H", hooray. Not), and it's held in place by some really fiendish looking clips. I can see they're one-use only, but no amount of prying with a screwdriver would get the things off. So - 2 questions:

1: For all you DV-changers out there, how the hell do you get the ****** clips off? I am seriously wondering whether I could just trim the pipes down a bit /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif cos I can't see how on earth you can get the buggers off otherwise!

2: Can one get hold of replacement clips? I ask, as I can't see how I could get a jubilee clip into the depression on the top of the DV... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sorry mate can't help. I can tell you that the guy from AmD took less than 10 minutes to take my DV out, test it (they pump it and release it and have a machine that measures if it is leaking) and put it in again, so I am sure once you have the technique it should be ok...

Surprised the dealer couldn't test it the same way !

They are a real nightmare to get off. I used a combination of needle-nose pliers, a flat-head screw-driver, and a small electronics screw-driver.

You've just got to use a combination of the above tools to lever and pull the clip appart.

If anyone knows a quick and easy method, please tell us.

Regarding replacement clips, you need a 21-25mm jubilee clip, and a small one, 10-13mm I think. Do a search, I'm sure I've posted the clip sizes in the past.

Hi there
You can remove the clips with side cutters or snips as used for cutting electrical cables and piano wire. When you have removed the valve you can test its function by sucking on the smallest pipe connection which should open the valve if it is working correctly also if you blow down the same pippe it should shut or remain shut under pressure up to a point. Check if it is opening by feeling for movement via the other two ports. By the way dealers have not got a clue about D/V problems or diagnosis of such problems in my experience.

Yep.. as Al says... needle nose pliers and screw driver and quite a bit of patience... they are real little b@stards to get off! I just used jubilee clips to re-attach the new one... got a hyperboost DV not the standard one tho. The clip on the vacuum hose just fited on over the bulge at the end of it...

I totally agree... I took mine to audi and said the DV was faulty... the person on the service desk when i called up said "Whats that?" and surprise surprise, they didnt find a problem... So i changed it for a Hyperboost.

So - to judge by the replies, brute force and ignorance is the way forward here. Do the AMD guys have a special toolkit for this or something? And did they re-use the original clips, audigirl?

No, they used new clips...

Don't think they had special tools - just snipped off the old ones pulled the DV out and clipped in the new ones!

Ive never had a problem removing those special clips on my car, Use a wire cutter and try to 'peel' back the clip so it unclips from its 3 lugs and unwind it. Simple !!
And ive always replaced my clips with originals so to keet it looking OEM and untampered. Ive got a special tool for that and a set of different sized clips.

when u remove the clips they have a number printed on them, this is the size of the clip. U can order them from vag parts but make sure u give them a good description of where u removed them from. Oh and they cost pennies.
